Paul’s words in Philippians 3 put a needed mindset in front of believers: “I have not arrived.” Paul does not say this because he lacks confidence in Christ. Paul says it because spiritual maturity begins when a person stops pretending that yesterday’s faithfulness means the work is finished.
Christ’s grip on Paul is the foundation for Paul’s pursuit of Christ. Paul reaches forward because Christ has already reached down and taken hold of him. Paul’s hold is a hope, something he keeps pressing into. Christ’s hold is settled, done, and stronger than every other hope competing for a place in life.
Paul’s command to forget what is behind does not mainly mean forgetting past failures. Paul refuses to count his wins. Spiritual successes, meaningful mission trips, powerful small groups, and seasons when God used someone in a big way can become idols when they start replacing the simple pursuit of knowing Christ. God’s work through a person can become a distraction from God’s work in that person.
Paul calls mature believers to think this way because maturity does not mean having arrived. Maturity means honestly admitting where growth is still needed and then living up to the truth already attained. The next step is usually not hidden behind some missing insight. Obedience often comes before the next insight. The thing a person already knows God is asking them to do may be the very place where maturity needs to begin.
Paul gives people, not merely principles, as examples to imitate. Mature Christians do not make themselves the standard. Mature Christians keep saying that God is not done with them yet, and they keep pursuing Christ’s resurrection power, Christ’s sufferings, and Christ’s life being formed in them. A person who imitates only himself has quietly decided that he already knows enough.
Paul warns with tears because drift is not neutral. The direction of a life matters. Citizens of heaven cannot be governed finally by earthly things, because Christ will return, transform humble bodies, and subject everything to himself. Paul’s call is not to get everything figured out. Paul’s call is to stand firm in the middle of the not yet, because Christ has secured the future and settled the past.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Admit that you have not arrived Paul’s confession does not produce shame or spiritual paralysis. It tears down the fake confidence that comes from comparing one life to another or living off old wins. Honest immaturity becomes a doorway into real growth when Christ, rather than personal progress, remains the goal. [04:30]
- 2. Christ’s grip is stronger than yours Paul presses on, but he never treats his pursuit as the thing holding his salvation together. Christ took hold of Paul before Paul ever went looking for Christ. Security in Christ does not make effort unnecessary; it gives effort a foundation that cannot be shaken. [07:24]
- 3. Do not turn good things into idols Ministry, community, missions, and past spiritual breakthroughs can all become substitutes for knowing Christ himself. God’s work through a life is good, but it cannot become more important than God’s work in that life. Every gift must keep pointing back to Jesus rather than becoming the thing a person lives for. [11:46]
- 4. Obey the truth already known Spiritual stuckness is often not caused by a lack of information. The next insight may sit on the other side of an act of obedience that has been delayed, resisted, or explained away. Maturity begins when a person stops waiting for perfect clarity and does the next right thing God has already made clear. [19:00]
- 5. Stand firm in the not yet Christian joy does not wait until life feels resolved and easy. Heavenly citizenship gives believers a future that Christ himself will finish, even while growth remains unfinished now. Standing firm means refusing to drift while trusting that the reward is finally knowing Christ.
