He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children. (Psalm 78:5-6, ESV)

Psalm 78 puts a burden on God’s people to make sure the next generation knows the Lord. The psalmist looks back over Israel’s history and shows God’s faithfulness right beside Israel’s unfaithfulness. God parted the sea, guided His people in the wilderness, gave them water and food, and showed His power over Egypt. Yet Israel kept forgetting. Spiritual amnesia led them to complain, rebel, and chase after other gods.

The psalmist says these things cannot be hidden from the children. God’s glorious deeds, His might, and His wonders must be told to the coming generation. These are not just old stories. They show who God is. His provision shows His care. His mercy shows His patience. His justice shows His holiness. God’s great deeds reveal God’s great character, and the next generation needs to know Him.

God’s law is also a gift that must be passed down. His commands are not burdensome. They are His good design for man. The greatest need of the next generation is not better behavior, a clean outward appearance, or merely a church background. The next generation’s greatest need is regeneration. Israel knew commands and still rebelled because the issue was in the heart. Children need Jesus Christ, new hearts, and new desires that only God can give. Christ lived the perfect life, died the substitutionary death, was buried, and rose again on the third day. The next generation must hear that gospel and be called to repent and believe.

Deuteronomy 6 places this work first in the home. Parents are the primary disciplers of their children, and their lives either reinforce or contradict their words. The gospel must be taught simply, repeatedly, and lived out with humility and repentance. The local church also carries this burden. Older generations must help younger generations, and every part of the church can help pour into kids, students, and young adults so that they set their hope in God and do not forget His works.
