Judges 2 stands at the edge of the promised land and shows what happens when the chain breaks. Joshua has done his job. Israel has made it. The promises given to Abraham have landed in real dirt, real inheritance, real homes. But then Joshua dies, and the elders who had seen the great works of the Lord die with him. The next generation rises up, and the text says something terrifyingly precise: they “did not know the Lord or the work that he had done for Israel.”

The text does not say they became atheists. It says they were strangers. That is relational before it is doctrinal. The generation that saw God move held fast, but the generation that only inherited a story without a living witness did not. One generation was enough for the knowledge of the living God to go dark.

That ignorance did not stay neutral. Judges says the people did evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals. Ideological tribes become belonging. Likes, followers, careers, zip codes, and titles start telling people what they are worth.

God speaks a different word. The Father speaks identity before performance, just as he spoke over Jesus before any miracle: “This is my Son, whom I love.” The cross declares value not as a metric to be earned, but as a life poured out by God himself. Movable opinions make cruel gods, but the Father names sons and daughters with a love that does not move.

Moses saw the danger coming and gave Israel the Shema. “Hear, O Israel” begins with love for the Lord with heart, soul, and might, then moves straight into daily life. The word must be taught diligently to children, talked about sitting in the house, walking by the way, lying down, and rising. Faith is not passed on by dropping kids off once a week and hoping for the best. Faith travels through relationship, proximity, dinner tables, car rides, text threads, and ordinary moments.

Jesus answers the brokenness of Judges. Where there was no king and everyone did what was right in his own eyes, the true King has come. God is the Father of the fatherless, and Jesus says, “I will not leave you as orphans.” Whatever chain arrived broken, the Lord can repair it, and the call now is simple: don’t break the chain.

Maybe your father wasn't there, or father was there but he just brought damage and not blessing. For many of you know, father's day is a hard day because it's a reminder of what you didn't have. It's a reminder of the brokenness that you grew up in. I think it deserves to be named on a day like today, not just skipped over for the sake of sentiment. Father's Day is complicated. I know that. But here's what I also know. I know the faithfulness of the father, the father. I know the goodness of the father. I know the word of God that says he puts lonely into families. I know the word of God that describes God as the father of the fatherless. I know this is a reality that that I have experienced, that many people have experienced, and that you and I can walk in, and we can break this ongoing chain of not passing this on to the generation. We can repair our family trees and say from here on, no more. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

“So today, we stand here at the edge of the book of Judges. And what I wanna show you is what happens when the line breaks. Because the line can break in just one generation. And here's a question I want us to think about at the start of this sermon, and I'll come back to this. But what is this is the question. What are you passing on right now and to whom? What are you passing on right now and to whom? The main idea of this sermon is this this, that every generation must choose to pass the faith on or the next generation pays the price. Every generation must choose to pass on what God has given us and shown us, or the next generation suffers.”
