Faithfulness That Finishes: Passing the Gospel to Others

Paul gives faithfulness weight because fruit takes time to grow. The fruit of the Spirit is one cluster, and faithfulness holds the rest together with staying power. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self control may appear in moments, but a settled ripening character needs the grace that keeps going. Faithfulness is a fruit that finishes.

Second Timothy 2 places Paul in a Roman dungeon, cold, lonely, and near the end of his life, writing to Timothy as a loved son. Paul does not tell Timothy to try harder or dig deeper. Paul says, “be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” Christ supplies the very strength he commands, and the branch does not strain to produce grapes. The grapes grow because the branch is connected to the vine.

Paul shows faithfulness as a baton passed on. The gospel moves from Paul to Timothy, from Timothy to faithful people, and from those faithful people to others also. Faithfulness does not keep the baton polished and shiny. Faithfulness entrusts the gospel to the next link in the chain.

Paul then gives three pictures. The soldier expects hardship and refuses distraction, asking of every pursuit whether it helps please the one who enlisted him. The athlete runs according to the rules, not looking for shortcuts, but looking for the crown and the “well done, good and faithful servant.” The farmer works long and waits, plowing and sowing in the ordinary, unseen places where nobody claps, yet heaven sees.

Paul then brings everything to the centre: “Remember Jesus Christ.” Christ is risen from the dead, so suffering does not have the final word. Christ is the offspring of David, so hope is not vague sentimentality but confidence in the reigning King. Paul may be chained like a criminal, but “the word of God is not bound.” The messenger can be locked up, but the gospel cannot.

The trustworthy hymn gives both warning and comfort. If Christ is denied, he will deny. A settled turning away from him is no small thing. Yet if his people are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself. Jesus cannot stop being Jesus. Peter’s tears did not earn restoration, but Christ’s prayer brought him back. Faithfulness is not the fruit of the will, but the fruit of the Spirit, grown in weak people by the faithful Son who went all the way to the cross.
