And the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying: "A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. He who has ears, let him hear." Then the disciples came and said to him, "Why do you speak to them in parables?" And he answered them, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. For to the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. Indeed, in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says: 'You will indeed hear but never understand, and you will indeed see but never perceive. For this people's heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.' But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. For truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it. Hear then the parable of the sower: When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away. As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty."

Observation questions- In the parable of the sower, what are the four kinds of soil, and what happens to the seed in each one? [01:12:16]
- According to Jesus’ explanation, what specifically causes the stony-ground hearer to fall away, and what specifically chokes the thorny-ground hearer? [01:17:00]
- What promise does Jesus give troubled hearts in John 14:1-3, and what does He say He is going to do for His people? [01:05:55]
- What pictures are used to describe a hardened heart, and what repeated kinds of traffic make that heart hard? [01:20:06]
Interpretation questions- Jesus says the sower and the seed stay the same, but the results differ because of the soil. What does that suggest about why the word can be powerful in one life and seem ineffective in another? [01:34:04]
- The wayside heart is described as a highway for the world’s traffic. How can a person hear the word clearly and still treat grace as if it does not concern them? [01:20:56]
- The stony-ground hearer receives the word quickly with joy, yet has no root. What is the difference between an excited start and a truly surrendered heart? [01:23:39]

Application questions- Christ is the only true anchor when the world feels shaky. When the heart gets troubled, where does trust usually run first—toward Christ, or toward money, stability, work, people, or control? What might it look like this week to lean on Christ first? [01:06:24]
- A heart can become hard by repeated traffic from pleasures, sins, and selfish aims. What repeated patterns may be pressing down the soul right now and making it harder to receive God’s word deeply? [01:20:09]
- Some responses to God are quick and emotional, but the root never goes down. Where might there be outward interest in spiritual things without deep surrender underneath? What pressure or trial tends to expose that? [01:22:30]
- Thorns grow on their own, but grace must be carefully cultivated. What thorns tend to grow back in daily life—old habits, old relationships, old thought patterns, worldly cares, or the pull of comfort? Which one most needs to be uprooted rather than just trimmed back? [01:27:43]
- The garden of the heart must be broken up by repentance. Is there any area where confession has been delayed, or where sin has been managed on the surface without letting the Lord deal with the root? [01:40:19]
- Without Christ, nothing lasting can be done. What helps a person stay connected to Christ in a real way—prayer, Scripture, obedience, confession, fellowship, serving others? Which of those has been neglected lately? [01:30:08]
- Christ being real in a life should show up in character, not words only. If someone watched closely this week—at home, at work, in traffic, under stress—what kind of fruit would they see? [01:46:47]
