And the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. He who has ears, let him hear.” Then the disciples came and said to him, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” And he answered them, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. For to the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. Indeed, in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says: ‘“You will indeed hear but never understand, and you will indeed see but never perceive.” For this people's heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.’ But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. For truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it. Hear then the parable of the sower: When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away. As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”

[43:29]Luke 8:11-15 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they believe for a while, and in time of testing fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience.
Observation questions- In Jesus’ explanation of the parable, what happens to the seed on the path, on rocky ground, among thorns, and on good soil?

Interpretation questions- If the heart is the soil, what does that suggest about why two people can hear the same word from God and respond to it very differently? [39:24]
- The thorny soil is described as ground where other things already have roots. Why are long-standing desires like wealth, attention, or power so dangerous to spiritual growth? [38:24]
- Jesus says good soil bears fruit thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold. What might that say about fruitfulness being God’s work in a person rather than a person trying to prove something? [49:24]
- God keeps sowing and keeps working the soil instead of giving up after one bad season. How does that shape the way a person understands grace, repentance, and spiritual growth? [39:51]
Application questions- Which picture of soil feels closest to the condition of the heart right now: path, rocky ground, thorns, or good soil? What makes that picture feel true in this season? [48:50]

- What pressures tend to scorch spiritual roots when faith becomes costly—criticism, conflict, suffering, embarrassment, busyness, or something else? What would it look like to grow deeper roots there? [42:27]
- Jesus says a person cannot serve both God and money. Where do the cares of the world or the desire for security most often compete with trust in God right now? [43:29]
- God’s word is an invitation to be seen, fully known, and welcomed into love. Is it easy or hard to receive that invitation personally? Why? [44:20]
