What Kind of Soil Are You? | The Parable of the Sower | Luke 8:4-15

Jesus tells a simple story in Luke 8, but the story presses one of the most uncomfortable principles in Scripture. The farmer scatters seed everywhere, and the seed is good because the seed is the word of God. The issue is not the quality of the seed. The issue is the condition of the soil.

The crowd around Jesus gets bigger and bigger, but Jesus is not impressed by crowd size. Jesus knows that not everyone listening is actually receiving. The farmer throws the seed broadly, generously, almost recklessly, because the heart of God offers the good news widely. The same seed, though, produces very different results depending on where it lands.

A hardened heart cannot receive the word. The path is ground packed down by constant traffic, hard and compressed, and the seed just sits on top of it until the birds take it away. Jesus says the devil comes and quickly removes the word so that it never takes root. Cynicism, compromise, bitterness, pride, spiritual apathy, endless noise, and constant distraction can pound the soul down like a dirt road until truth hits it but never gets into it.

A shallow heart cannot endure pressure. The rocky soil receives the word with joy, and something sprouts fast, but there is no depth and no place for roots to go. When testing comes, that kind of faith withdraws, departs, or abandons. Emotion can be a good response to grace, but emotion without surrender, excitement without endurance, and inspiration without change will not last when the sun gets hot.

A crowded heart cannot produce fruit. The thorny soil does not reject the seed right away, but the plant is slowly suffocated. Cares, riches, pleasures, schedules, responsibilities, and even very good things can crowd Jesus into the corner of the heart. A life full of everything before God eventually becomes spiritually empty.

The good soil hears the word, holds it fast, and bears fruit with patience. Healthy growth is not instant, and spiritual maturity cannot be rushed in some “get her done” mode. The good soil is humble, teachable, obedient, and enduring. The evidence is not perfection, but fruit: hunger for Jesus, joy that circumstances cannot steal, humility, love, peace, patience, and the fruit of the Spirit beginning to show. Jesus ends with the call, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear,” because not everyone who listens truly hears.
