Jesus draws a hard line between the vertical and the horizontal. The vertical is a person’s relationship with God, and the horizontal is a person’s relationship with fellow man. The cross shows both lines meeting, with Christ reaching toward heaven and earth, reconciling humanity to God. Righteousness, then, cannot be reduced to shouting, gifts, altar service, or religious display while a person remains wrong with a brother or sister.
Matthew records Jesus taking the command against murder down into the heart. Anger, insults, contempt, and broken relationships carry weight before God because they reveal what lives beneath the surface. Jesus says that a gift at the altar must wait when a brother has something against the worshiper. The protocol is plain: get right with fellow man if a person wants to get right with God.
The horizontal becomes difficult because wounded weapons are everywhere. Hurt people hurt people, and pain can reprogram a person into dysfunction. Dysfunction moves through marriages, families, friendships, workplaces, and churches, until somebody lets God raise them up as a curse breaker. Wounded people often build walls, refuse accountability, push away those who get close, and call everybody else dysfunctional while claiming to be fine.
Relationship must come before religion because everybody needs somebody. Love for people is visible proof of love for an invisible God. A person cannot claim love for God while hating the brother seen every day. Praise cannot cover a dirty altar, because praise was already stolen when the heart turned against a brother. Spiritual bullying cannot be carried into God’s house and then dressed up as worship.
Pain is real, practical, and often slow to heal. Pain found Jesus in rejection, betrayal, loneliness, injustice, and the cross itself. Christ did not say that pain would never be felt again, but Calvary declared that pain no longer has the final power. “It is finished” means the ransom pain held over broken lives has been paid through redemption.
Forgiveness does not demand that a person pretend nothing happened or force memory to disappear. God does the forgetting, but God calls His people to forgive. The personal altar must be repaired before public altar activity means what it ought to mean. Reconciliation with fellow man becomes the overlooked principle of power because God first came to reconcile humanity to Himself.

Key Takeaways
- 1. A good vertical needs a horizontal [13:03] The cross refuses to separate devotion to God from responsibility toward people. Christ joins heaven and earth, so a life that reaches upward while striking outward cannot reflect His righteousness. Love for God becomes visible in the way His children handle conflict, injury, and repair. [13:03]
- 2. Hurt people become wounded weapons [14:39] Pain left untreated does not simply stay private. Dysfunction can move from one relationship to another and become a generational pattern that damages spouses, children, churches, and communities. God can raise up a curse breaker, but that work begins when pain is named instead of defended. [14:39]
- 3. Praise cannot cover a dirty altar [28:40] Worship cannot be used to evade the work of reconciliation. A person may sing, shout, give, and receive prayer, yet still resist the Holy Spirit’s reminder that a relationship is broken. God does not need to steal false praise because a heart that refuses repair has already surrendered its integrity. [28:40]
- 4. Pain’s power ended at Calvary [34:34] Christ does not minimize the feeling of pain, especially pain caused by those once trusted. Calvary declares that pain may remain in memory without remaining in control. Forgiveness becomes possible because redemption has broken the authority pain claims over a life.
