Overflowing: Rivers of Living Water in Us

God’s grace gathers thirsty people to Jesus, and the living water journey moves from longing, to filling, to overflowing. Psalm 42 names the deep thirst in every human heart, the kind of thirst that good things cannot finally satisfy. The cross shows Jesus crying, “I am thirsty,” carrying human brokenness and sin upon himself so that God’s people may receive fullness of grace and sacrificial love. God’s grace does not stop with filling a person, because God fills so that living water can flow through that person into the world.

John 7 sets Jesus at the feast of tabernacles, where Israel remembered wilderness thirst and God’s water from the rock. The water ceremony at the temple declared again that God is provider and source of life. Jesus stood on the final day and cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me,” and that invitation did not send people somewhere else or ask them to earn their way. Jesus simply says, “Come,” because Jesus himself is the source of living water.

The invitation is open to anyone, no matter who that person is or where that person is from. Prevenient grace means God is already calling, already drawing, before a person even knows to seek God. The Greek word for “heart” can also mean “belly,” the deepest place of a person, the center of the soul. The Holy Spirit begins the work of life there, not just on the surface, not only in behavior, but deep in joy, wounds, fear, loneliness, anxiety, and thirst.

Sanctification is that gracious journey where the Holy Spirit changes the heart and the living water begins to flow toward others. The Jackson River gives a picture of that life. The river begins as a small mountain stream, keeps flowing, joins other waters, becomes part of the James River, and finally reaches the ocean. The living water does not stop, and God takes small prayers, small kindnesses, small steps of faith, and small encouraging words and uses them for something greater.

Revelation 22 shows the river fully revealed, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb. The river that begins in the believer’s heart will one day fill all creation. The tree of life stands beside it, and its leaves are for the healing of the nations. God’s river restores what is broken, brings reconciliation where there is division, hope where there is despair, and makes all things new.
