Day 1: Pride Blocks Grace, Humility Invites It
Pride is a significant barrier to receiving God's grace. It manifests in self-satisfaction and looking down on others. God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humility opens the door to God's grace, filling our lives with joy and peace. Pride often blinds us to our need for God, making us self-reliant and dismissive of others. In contrast, humility acknowledges our dependence on God and our need for His grace. When we humble ourselves, we create space for God to work in our lives, bringing joy and peace that surpasses understanding. [02:23]
"But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, 'God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.' Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." (James 4:6-7, ESV)
Reflection: In what areas of your life do you find pride creeping in, and how can you practice humility today to invite God's grace?
Day 2: Active Resistance Against Temptation
Resisting the devil requires active engagement. Temptation often reaches a peak, and it is at this point that we must choose to resist and flee. Victory is possible, and as we draw near to God, He draws near to us, strengthening us in our struggle. This resistance is not passive; it involves preparation and a conscious decision to turn away from sin. By actively resisting temptation, we align ourselves with God's will and experience His strength in our lives. [04:42]
"Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you." (James 4:7-8a, ESV)
Reflection: What specific temptations do you face regularly, and what practical steps can you take to actively resist them today?
Day 3: Genuine Repentance Leads to Restoration
James calls for genuine repentance, urging us to lament, mourn, and weep over our sins. This is about recognizing the gravity of sin and turning back to God with a humble heart. True humility leads to God's lifting us up, restoring us to a place of grace and peace. Repentance is not about living in perpetual sorrow but about acknowledging our wrongs and seeking God's forgiveness. It is through genuine repentance that we experience God's grace and restoration. [06:07]
"Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you." (James 4:9-10, ESV)
Reflection: Is there a sin in your life that you need to genuinely repent of today? How can you turn back to God with a humble heart?
Day 4: Temptation as an Opportunity for Righteousness
Temptation is an opportunity to do what is right by turning away from it. We must be proactive, changing our environment and habits to avoid falling into sin. This involves removing triggers and making no provision for the flesh. By viewing temptation as an opportunity for righteousness, we can grow in our faith and align our actions with God's will. [18:35]
"But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires." (Romans 13:14, ESV)
Reflection: What changes can you make in your environment or habits to turn temptation into an opportunity for righteousness today?
Day 5: The Importance of a Spiritual Diet
Our strength comes from the spiritual food we consume daily. We must be vigilant about what we allow into our hearts and minds, as a diet of violence, lust, anger, and depression will fuel those very things in our lives. By feeding on God's Word and surrounding ourselves with positive influences, we can strengthen our faith and live in alignment with God's will. [28:27]
"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things." (Philippians 4:8, ESV)
Reflection: What is one change you can make to your spiritual diet today to ensure you are feeding your mind and heart with what is true, honorable, and pure?
Sermon Summary
In James chapter 4, we are reminded of the profound truth that the devil does not make us do anything; rather, he entices us, much like a fisherman uses a lure to catch fish. The real battle lies within us, in our desires and pride. Pride, which manifests as a deep satisfaction in our achievements or lifestyle, is a barrier to God's grace. God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. When we humble ourselves, we open the door to God's grace, which fills our lives with joy and peace.
James 4:7 calls us to submit to God and resist the devil, promising that he will flee from us. This resistance is not passive; it requires active engagement and preparation. Temptation often crescendos to a point where it becomes most difficult, and it is at this point that we must choose to resist and flee. Victory over temptation is possible, and as we draw near to God, He draws near to us, strengthening us in our struggle.
James also warns against being double-minded, loving the world while claiming to love God. He calls for genuine repentance, urging us to lament, mourn, and weep over our sins. This is not about living in perpetual sorrow but about recognizing the gravity of sin and turning back to God with a humble heart. True humility leads to God's lifting us up, restoring us to a place of grace and peace.
Temptation is an opportunity to do what is right by turning away from it. We must be proactive, changing our environment and habits to avoid falling into sin. This involves removing triggers and making no provision for the flesh. Our strength comes from the spiritual food we consume daily, and we must be vigilant about what we allow into our hearts and minds.

Sermon Clips
God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble and one aspect of pride is loving the world, having a deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one's own achievement or lifestyle. That's also pride. Look at what I've done, look at what I've accomplished. So God resists the proud. [00:01:06]
Submit to God, resist the devil, and he will flee from you. And I think that's one of the things we forget about being Christians is we somehow think temptation is easy. It's easy to say no, it's easy to resist, it's no problem at all. But we actually have to resist, meaning there's a fight, meaning there's a struggle. [00:03:25]
Temptation reaches a point that is very difficult, and that is the defining moment in many of our lives. When you're fasting and it I'm pretty hungry, I'm pretty and then 3 hours later you're starving. That temptation or the lust of the flesh will start out and it reaches a crescendo. [00:04:21]
Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your heart, you double-minded. God, James is pretty hard, isn't he? Or is he just being honest and writing at a time when the church was fairly old at this time and people can fall back into their way? [00:05:18]
Lament and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord and He will lift you up. Now personally, I think this is a l, why is he saying lament and mourn and weep? Don't be laughing. [00:05:54]
Temptation is also an opportunity to do what is right by turning from it. See, temptation isn't wrong. People sometimes say, Shane, where are these thoughts coming from? I've never had that thought before. Why? There's a season of testing sometimes that the enemy will bring in thoughts. [00:18:35]
No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man. But God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation, He makes a way of escape that you may be able to bear it. So there's a whole bunch of exit doors here. [00:19:04]
The source of our strength comes from the food that we choose. A daily diet of violence, lust, anger, and depression will fuel those very things in our lives. See, this is the big reason I'm like most of you. I know most of you here that we're careful on entertainment. [00:28:17]
The more you say no on a certain area, the stronger you become. The more you say no, the more you resist the enemy, he starts to lose that power and he withdraws. So there's a battle, it's difficult, but you put on the full armor of God. [00:34:07]
Make no provision for the flesh. That word provision, it's almost like pora when the is ISA pora pooma all these Greek words I get them confused a little bit but this one make no provision for the flesh is actually forethought or planning. You're not going to plan ahead to lust. [00:35:02]
If you plan ahead to fulfill something, it will happen. It will happen because as our mind thinks, our feet go. [00:36:00]
God is faithful, not you, not me. God is faithful. He'll give you the way of exit. He'll make it, but you're going to have to bear it. There's going to be a load to carry. Somehow we have in this mindset that temptation's going to be easy. [00:31:40]
