Overcoming Prayer Challenges: Persistence and Faith

Summary

In today's exploration of prayer, we delve into the reasons why prayer can often feel challenging and what we can do to overcome these difficulties. We are guided by the teachings of Jesus, particularly from the Sermon on the Mount, where He encourages us to ask, seek, and knock, promising that God, who loves to give, will respond. However, in our modern world, prayer has become increasingly difficult due to our self-image as masters of our own destiny, bolstered by technology and a sense of self-sufficiency. This mindset can make prayer feel alien, as it requires us to acknowledge our limitations and dependence on God.

Jesus teaches us through parables the importance of persistence in prayer. In Luke 18, He shares the story of a widow who persistently seeks justice from an unjust judge, illustrating that we should always pray and not give up. The widow's tenacity eventually leads to her receiving justice, not because of the judge's character, but because of her relentless pursuit. Similarly, in Luke 11, Jesus tells of a friend who, despite initial reluctance, provides for another due to the latter's shameless audacity. These stories emphasize the power of persistence and the importance of standing firm in our requests to God.

Prayer is not about wearing God down, as He is not like the unjust judge or the reluctant friend. God is just and eager to help. Our persistence in prayer is not to change God's mind but to align our hearts with His will and to remain open to His timing and methods. As we stand before God with our requests, we are reminded of our limitations and the need to rely on Him. We are encouraged to keep our eyes open for God's work in our lives, recognizing answers to prayer that may not initially be obvious.

Key Takeaways:

- The Challenge of Modern Prayer: In our modern world, prayer is often difficult because we are conditioned to rely on technology and our own abilities, fostering a sense of autonomy that makes prayer seem unnecessary. However, prayer requires us to acknowledge our limitations and dependence on God, which is countercultural in today's society. [00:52]

- Persistence in Prayer: Jesus teaches us to always pray and not give up, as illustrated by the parable of the persistent widow. Our persistence is not about changing God's mind but about demonstrating our faith and aligning our hearts with His will. [02:27]

- The Power of Standing Firm: Like the widow and the friend in Jesus' parables, we are encouraged to stand firm in our prayers, trusting that God hears us and will respond in His perfect timing. This act of standing is a powerful demonstration of faith and reliance on God. [06:22]

- Recognizing God's Work: As we pray, we must remain vigilant and open to recognizing God's work in our lives. Answers to prayer may not always be immediate or obvious, but by reflecting on our experiences, we can often see God's hand at work in unexpected ways. [08:13]

- God's Nature and Our Persistence: Unlike the unjust judge or the reluctant friend, God is just and eager to help. Our persistence in prayer is not about wearing God down but about maintaining our connection with Him and being open to His guidance and provision. [09:11]

Day 1: The Illusion of Self-Sufficiency
In today's world, the rapid advancement of technology and the emphasis on self-reliance have created an environment where prayer can feel unnecessary or even alien. We often see ourselves as the masters of our own destiny, capable of solving our problems without divine intervention. However, this mindset can hinder our spiritual growth, as it prevents us from acknowledging our limitations and our need for God's guidance and support. Prayer is a countercultural act that requires humility and the recognition that we are not in control of everything. By embracing prayer, we open ourselves to the possibility of divine assistance and the peace that comes from trusting in God's plan. [00:52]

"For thus says the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, 'In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.' But you were unwilling." (Isaiah 30:15, ESV)

Reflection: What is one area of your life where you rely solely on your own strength? How can you invite God into that area today?

Day 2: The Faithfulness of Persistence
Jesus teaches us the importance of persistence in prayer through the parable of the persistent widow. This story illustrates that our persistence is not about changing God's mind but about demonstrating our faith and aligning our hearts with His will. The widow's relentless pursuit of justice is a powerful example of how we should approach prayer—with determination and trust that God hears us. Persistence in prayer helps us to remain connected to God and open to His timing and methods, even when answers are not immediate. [02:27]

"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up." (Galatians 6:9, ESV)

Reflection: Is there a prayer request you have given up on? How can you renew your commitment to pray persistently for it today?

Day 3: Standing Firm in Faith
The parables of the persistent widow and the friend at midnight teach us the power of standing firm in our prayers. By trusting that God hears us and will respond in His perfect timing, we demonstrate our faith and reliance on Him. Standing firm in prayer is not about wearing God down but about maintaining our connection with Him and being open to His guidance and provision. This act of faith is a testament to our belief in God's goodness and His desire to help us. [06:22]

"Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord!" (Psalm 31:24, ESV)

Reflection: What is one prayer you can commit to standing firm in, trusting in God's perfect timing and provision?

Day 4: Recognizing God's Subtle Work
As we pray, it is essential to remain vigilant and open to recognizing God's work in our lives. Answers to prayer may not always be immediate or obvious, but by reflecting on our experiences, we can often see God's hand at work in unexpected ways. This requires a heart that is attentive and willing to see beyond the surface, acknowledging that God's ways are higher than our own. By cultivating an awareness of God's presence, we can better appreciate the subtle ways He answers our prayers and guides us. [08:13]

"Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known." (Jeremiah 33:3, ESV)

Reflection: Can you think of a time when God answered a prayer in an unexpected way? How can you cultivate a greater awareness of His subtle work in your life today?

Day 5: Trusting in God's Just Nature
Unlike the unjust judge or the reluctant friend in Jesus' parables, God is just and eager to help. Our persistence in prayer is not about wearing God down but about maintaining our connection with Him and being open to His guidance and provision. Trusting in God's nature means believing that He is good, just, and desires the best for us. As we persist in prayer, we align our hearts with His will and remain open to His perfect timing and methods. [09:11]

"The Lord is righteous in all his ways and kind in all his works." (Psalm 145:17, ESV)

Reflection: How does trusting in God's just nature change the way you approach prayer? What is one way you can deepen your trust in Him today?

Quotes

The fundamental reason why prayer became difficult in the modern period was Humanity's modern self-image as those who especially through technology have gained control over the world. Haven't we rather like affluence this assumed position of Mastery over the world has deluded modern people into trusting their own capacity to achieve all human ends and has promoted a sense of autonomy and self-sufficiency to which prayer is alien. [00:00:50]

Petitionary prayer is recognition of the limits of human abilities but the modern age has encouraged the sense that all problems have Human Solutions and all human desires May in the end be realizable by human means especially the unrealized potentials of technology so I'm diluted every day into thinking I and the human race and education science technology can solve every problem and uh Grant every desire but we can't makes prayer hard. [00:01:35]

Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them they should always pray and not give up how long do we keep praying well Jesus says always how long is that when do we give up Jesus says not give up and the idea here is not this is a mechanical uh guarantee of getting whatever it is that you might think that you want it is as long as it's in your heart let it be in your prayer. [00:02:27]

There was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea grant me Justice against my adversary for some time he refused for some time but finally he said to himself even though I don't fear God or care what people think yet because this Widow keeps bothering me I will see that she gets justice so that she won't eventually come and attack me. [00:03:43]

Listen to what the unjust judge said and will not God bring about Justice for his chosen ones who cry out to him when day and night will he keep putting them off I tell you he will see that they get Justice and quickly. Now quickly in the eyes of an eternal God may not be the same thing as quickly in the eyes of a finite little hurried person like me. [00:04:50]

Suppose you have a friend and you go to him at midnight say friend let me three loaves of bread friend of mine on a journey has come to me I have no food to offer him and suppose the one inside says don't bother me the door's already locked my children and I are already in bed you know once you put the kids down man if they get back up no more sleep the rest of the night I can't get up and give you anything. [00:05:43]

Even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship yet because of your Shameless audacity he will surely get up and give you as much as you need so I say to you and this is now in Luke as we have found it in the sermon of the mount in Matthew ask and it will be given to you seeking you will find knock and the door will be opened for everyone who asks receives and the one who seeks finds and to the one who knocks the door will be open. [00:06:22]

The idea here is just like the Widow uh who refuses to go away like the friend in the night that comes with Shameless audacity keep praying and don't give up and I think about this picture um in both cases with the uh with a widow and with a friend where they just stand now if I stand I'm out of the picture so I'll actually kneel and that might work too but we'll talk about standing together with somebody we are standing together. [00:07:59]

What happens is you could just kind of picture the judge uh he keeps looking out the window is she still there she's just standing there just silently tenaciously uh because she has this great desire for justice and that's a good thing just simply standing there the sight of her standing there invokes a great power that's the hour of asking pray and don't give up there's a friend who comes in the middle of the night guy doesn't want to get out of bed but he just keeps looking out the window asking his wife is he still there yep just standing there just waiting for the bread wants to feed his friend that's just standing there. [00:08:13]

Part of what I'm doing uh in my own prayers now is to just stand before God Lord I'm here I have this request I'm going to keep praying I'm not going to give up I don't know what will happen I'm not omniscient I don't know everything about what should happen I know that I am not there's not technology to solve this one we are The Fellowship of the withered hand I can't there's things I can do then I do them but there's things that are beyond my ability to do and then I pray I'm standing here God so you might want to stand as you pray today. [00:09:11]

As you go through the day keep looking for God to be at work uh I found as I began to pray about this uh actually last night uh it turns out there were six little pieces of information that came that were movements in just the direction that I had been praying for but I was expecting one particular solution kind of one real big real easily recognizable response and so at first it wasn't until this morning when I looked back on yesterday I thought oh my gosh oh my gosh that's an answer to prayer so keep looking I didn't even recognize that at first thank you God. [00:09:59]

Obviously in these stories uh the Jus is corrupt and and the judge is uh corrupt and unjust and the friend is pretty grudging and slow to help and God's not like that at all God is perfectly just God wants to help so why would we need to persist if it's not like in these stories to try to wear somebody down and I don't have time to get into that this time I don't usually do this but I uh encourage you really strongly in the next video I'm going to talk about why persistence in prayer might be necessary even though we have a God who loves to give and it's not about wearing God down.
