I want you to think how many of you you'll have to raise your hands that say you're totally content are currently pursuing more things just think about that those of you who say you're totally content with what you've got are you pursuing more things you know I've met people who say yeah I'm totally content and yet at the same time their lives they're trying to get more stuff and the question is well why if you're content if you're totally happy with what you've got why do you want more. [00:02:52]

The problem is when it comes to greed it's I really believe that today here in America we don't see greed as a very big sin right I mean we don't see it as a real serious issue I'm greedy I mean if I said man how many are really struggling with lust or immorality or this or that I'd be like I'm kind of ashamed to admit that that's one of those grosser sins one of those harder sins but if I say greed oh yeah I'm greedy you know I mean really I mean think about that think about the way our minds have been trained to think that well Greed's not a big deal. [00:04:18]

What do you set up for yourself do we do anything to guard against that you know it's one of those sins where we just kind of push off and go on you know yeah I'm greedy but but what are we gonna do we're going to set ourselves up so that we don't fall into this trap and then we keep ourselves from becoming more agree you keep ourselves keep our eyes from looking at things that we don't really need then aren't really necessary we don't cart ourselves in this area we don't take it seriously. [00:05:30]

Jesus is talking and instructing his disciples everything else someone comes up to Jesus and says hey Jesus tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me okay obviously this this guy had been dealing with some sort of legal battle with his brother that's god of this inheritance and he sees Jesus the authority and he says all you know what I'll go to him because he can just quickly tell him that this is only fair thing to do sounds like a simple request right I mean sounds like a normal request and in fact in June Arana me 21 it talks about how how you're supposed to divide up the inheritance. [00:09:38]

Watch out be on your guard against all kinds of greed a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions okay doesn't that seem a little harsh and this man just comes up and says hey Jesus would you tell my brother that he's supposed to divide the inheritance with me and immediately Jesus hey who appointed me judge who'd appointed me to be the arbiter in your little dispute there then he turns the crowd and says you guys be on the lookout make sure you don't become greedy because a man's life doesn't consist in the abundance of his possessions. [00:10:51]

Paul is teaching young Timothy you know this this pastor this this Minister you know just being careful of what's out there and being careful he doesn't become greedy and in 1st Timothy 6 verse 6 he says this but godliness with contentment is great gain for we brought nothing into the world and we can take nothing out of it but if we have food and clothing we will want we will be content with that people want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction for the love of money as a root of all kinds of evil. [00:13:44]

The biggest tragedy in this passage is it wasn't doesn't seem like in our standards a lot of us would say well that man wasn't being greedy he was just asking for what was fair but what Jesus was addressing was a deeper issue it was that this man was so consumed with getting what was fair the money that he was missing out on the things that were more important I mean think about this for a second he is standing before the son of God Jesus is offering a relationship with Almighty God and he is thinking about money. [00:15:56]

The problem with having a bunch of stuff is you got to worry about how to protect it right whenever you got nice stuff you got to wear well I better park way over there it's no one touches it I better get alarmed for my house my car my fish tank whatever you know I better insure this there's this there's this you know everything is insured because I don't want to lose any of it I've got that's the burden about having all these things you got to think to yourself like this man just constantly reasoning with himself what do I do now what do I do with this stuff that I've amassed. [00:23:42]

He uses this financial term and referring to a person's life have you ever thought about your life as a loan think about that is it really your life who gave you that life and who can take that life away from you this air that's just flowing through my lungs right now this is mine someone's giving this to me right now he's loaning it to me I'm gonna give you I'm gonna give you life God says I loan that to you and it's somewhat I can demand it back at any time it's not yours you think you can keep your life you think it's your life God says I'm gonna demand it back percent with it's not an amazing thought. [00:25:08]

The issue is in how much you make I mean for some of you God's gifted you to make money and it's almost like your stewardship to use that and to use that money to give away and to care for other people you ought to be making a lot that's not the sin the issue is is what you do with that are you rich toward God are you using it for yourself and just storing up things for yourself or could those three words describe you could you say I am rich toward God you see it's interesting all the stats show us that done the people who make more money actually give a smaller percentage to charities. [00:29:10]

I remember remember when I first met Lisa okay I know you guys are tired of my little love stories but I just man you know and remember when you're just first day has been over ten years now you know what I think about that time didn't have a lot of money but I wanted to spend it all on her you know because here's someone that I love so much and I just wanted this relationship so badly you know it's like man I'll give her anything you know I just want to be with I don't care we're poor together what I just want to be with her you know when nothing's change is still the same thing it's like man this incredible relationship that I've got that you know what I don't only care about stuff let me give it all to her. [00:30:49]

I want you to just become a little Kingdom minded here and just think about what we could do in this community for God in the name of God if we really were rich toward him I mean if our church was really rich toward God I understand this we're doing fine financially you guys see the financial reports you see the salaries you know everything we do financially and you see we're fine okay we're paying the bills are not I don't I have never had to come to the church to go help us out okay but I did think today I thought man the things we could have done the things we can do this next year if we were really thinking about God before ourselves and really rich toward him.
