Look to the Rock: Overcoming Fear Through God's Faithfulness

Isaiah 51 speaks into people who are weary, discouraged, and wondering how God’s promises could ever come to pass. God begins by telling those who seek Him to “look to the rock” from which they were hewn. Abraham and Sarah stand as proof that God does what seems impossible. God called one man and one barren woman, blessed them, multiplied them, and made a nation from them.

God also promises to comfort Zion’s waste places and make her wilderness like Eden. The desert becomes a garden. The barren place becomes a place of joy, thanksgiving, and singing. God’s people need to look back at where they came from, the prayers God has answered, the trials He has carried them through, and the promises He has already fulfilled. Yesterday’s victories should not be forgotten while today’s problems get all the attention.

God then shifts the focus from Israel’s history to His own character. God’s righteousness draws near, His salvation goes out, and His arm will judge the peoples. The heavens may vanish like smoke, the earth may wear out like a garment, and every earthly power will eventually fade. God’s salvation, however, is forever, and His righteousness will never fail. Circumstances change, people change, governments change, and systems crumble, but God does not change.

Isaiah also tells God’s people not to fear the reproach of man. Human criticism can hurt, especially when it comes from people who matter deeply, but people are temporary. Their opinions are not the final word. God’s truth remains, and His salvation continues to all generations. Identity cannot be determined by the crowd when God has spoken.

The people then cry out for God to awake and act as He did in the days of old. The Red Sea becomes the picture of a God who makes a way when there is no way. Egypt, the wilderness, captivity, and every impossible situation stand beneath God’s power. The ransomed of the Lord will return with singing, and sorrow and sighing will flee away.

God finally exposes the deeper problem: His people fear mortal men while forgetting their Maker. Man is like grass, temporary and limited. God stretched out the heavens, laid the foundations of the earth, and holds history in His hands. Fear grows when problems become bigger than God in the mind. Faith grows when God becomes bigger than the problem. Jesus stands as the fulfillment of God’s righteousness and salvation, the rock on which faith stands. When fear, discouragement, opposition, or uncertainty comes, God’s people must look to the rock.
