Fear is real, but God is greater. Christ is present, and faith moves forward even when fear shows up uninvited in quiet moments, big decisions, doctors’ offices, and all the “what if” questions that whisper, “You are not enough.” The fear of failure can leave people standing still, not because they do not know what to do, but because they are afraid of what might happen when they take that next step of faith.
Joshua 1:1-9 places Joshua at a critical moment. Moses, the trusted leader of Israel, is dead; the Jordan River lies ahead; powerful enemies and fortified cities wait in the Promised Land. God does not tell Joshua to believe in himself or trust his own strength. God tells Joshua, “Arise,” follow His Word, trust His presence, and be strong and courageous.
God’s command begins by facing reality. Moses is gone, leadership has changed, and responsibility now rests on Joshua. Yet God remains unchanged. The circumstances may change, but God’s purpose, provision, promises, and power do not change. “Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you” becomes the foundation for courage, because confidence does not rest in personal ability or sufficiency. Confidence rests in God’s presence and promises.
Joshua’s calling also requires action. God gives the land, but Joshua and Israel must still trust, obey, and move forward. Faith cannot remain on the riverbank admiring what God has done in the past. Faith steps into the calling God has placed before it. George Mueller’s life points to that same truth: there is a difference between saying God is faithful and allowing His faithfulness to shape what happens next.
God’s Word provides the strength and courage needed for that step. “Be strong and very courageous” means being resolute, firm, bold, and faithful even in the face of fear. God calls His people not merely to know His Word, but to preserve it, protect it, meditate on it, and live it out. A biblical worldview keeps life from turning to the right or left after the empty promises and philosophies of the world.
God’s presence finally makes courage possible. The Lord never leaves or forsakes His people. Fear may be overwhelming, but the Lord remains the helper. God calls His people to move forward, apply His Word with courage, and become a light to those around them. Strength and courage are found through Christ alone.

Key Takeaways
- 1. God remains when circumstances change God tells Joshua that Moses is dead, but God Himself is not gone. Fear often distorts perspective by making changed circumstances feel like abandonment. God’s faithfulness does not rise and fall with feelings, uncertainty, or loss. [54:00]
- 2. Faith must step off the riverbank Joshua could not simply admire God’s past work through Moses while remaining still. God’s promises called for trust and obedience in action, even with overwhelming odds ahead. Faith becomes real when God’s faithfulness shapes the next step. [60:56]
- 3. Courage grows through obedient Scripture God connects strength and courage to careful obedience to His Word. Knowing Scripture without doing it deceives the heart, while trying to act without knowing Scripture leads to confusion. God’s Word must be preserved, protected, studied, and applied. [64:00]
- 4. God’s presence defeats paralyzing fear God repeats His promise: “I will be with you.” Christian confidence does not come from being naturally strong, smart, or sufficient. God’s presence gives courage to move forward without flinching in the face of fear.
