Overcoming Discouragement: Lessons from the Road to Emmaus

Discouragement gets pictured like that little pokey thing from a sunflower. It may not be seen at first, but every time life rubs up against it, the hurt is felt again. Discouragement shows up at the gas pump, at the grocery store, in sickness, in disappointment, and in those moments when hope seems to have clicked off too soon.

Luke 24 puts that kind of discouragement on the road to Emmaus. Jesus has been crucified, the tomb is empty, the women have reported what the angel said, and two disciples decide they are done. Cleopas and his companion leave Jerusalem and head seven miles home, moving away from the very fellowship that could have strengthened them. Discouragement does that. It tells a hurting heart, “poor you,” and then tries to get that heart alone.

Jesus draws near while their eyes are restrained, and Jesus lets them talk. He already knows their trouble, but He gives them room to verbalize their hurt so truth can start working on the problem. Isaiah’s word stands behind that moment: God is with His people through waters, rivers, and fire. God does not just save a soul someday. God saves His people in the middle of discouragement and disappointment right now.

Discouragement also turns the heart backward. The “when I was in Gervais” mindset, like a child seat facing backward, keeps saying it was better back there. Paul’s word in Philippians pushes the other direction: forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead. The disciples’ words, “had hoped,” show a past-tense faith, a hope that feels dead because God did not do it the way they expected.

Discouragement then tempts the heart to question God’s care. Jesus does not baby those disciples. Jesus says, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe,” because selective belief cannot carry a crushed soul. Feelings lie, but God’s word stands firm in the heavens. Jesus opens Moses and the Prophets and shows that Christ had to suffer and enter His glory.

The broken bread opens their eyes, and hope becomes real again. The two disciples get right back up and return to Jerusalem because a burning heart cannot sit still. Prayer and Scripture stir the fire, and fellowship adds needed fuel. Jesus still meets discouraged people, still listens, still corrects, still restores hope, and still calls every heart to turn its eyes upon Him.
