Bible ReadingJudges 6:1–16 The people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord gave them into the hand of Midian seven years. The hand of Midian overpowered Israel, and because of Midian the people of Israel made for themselves the dens that are in the mountains and the caves and the strongholds. For whenever the Israelites planted crops, the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the East would come up against them. They would encamp against them and devour the produce of the land, as far as Gaza, and leave no sustenance in Israel and no sheep or ox or donkey. For they would come up with their livestock and their tents; they would come like locusts in number—both they and their camels could not be counted—so that they laid waste the land as they came in. And Israel was brought very low because of Midian. And the people of Israel cried out for help to the Lord. When the people of Israel cried out to the Lord on account of the Midianites, the Lord sent a prophet to the people of Israel. And he said to them, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: I led you up from Egypt and brought you out of the house of slavery. And I delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them out before you and gave you their land. And I said to you, ‘I am the Lord your God; you shall not fear the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell.’ But you have not obeyed my voice.”
[34:20]Now the angel of the Lord came and sat under the terebinth at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, while his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress to hide it from the Midianites. And the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, “The Lord is with you, O mighty man of valor.”
[40:26]And Gideon said to him, “Please, my lord, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all his wonderful deeds that our fathers recounted to us, saying, ‘Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt?’ But now the Lord has forsaken us and given us into the hand of Midian.” And the Lord turned to him and said, “Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you?”
[44:05]And he said to him, “Please, Lord, how can I save Israel? Behold, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.” And the Lord said to him, “But I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.”
[46:05]Judges 7:1–8 Then Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) and all the people who were with him rose early and encamped beside the spring of Harod. And the camp of Midian was north of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley. The Lord said to Gideon, “The people with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel boast over me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return home and hurry away from Mount Gilead.’” Then 22,000 of the people returned, and 10,000 remained. And the Lord said to Gideon, “The people are still too many. Take them down to the water, and I will test them for you there, and anyone of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ shall go with you, and anyone of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ shall not go.” So he brought the people down to the water. And the Lord said to Gideon, “Every one who laps the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set by himself. Likewise, every one who kneels down to drink.” And the number of those who lapped, putting their hands to their mouths, was 300 men, but all the rest of the people knelt down to drink water. And the Lord said to Gideon, “With the 300 men who lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hand, and let all the others go every man to his home.”

[35:20]Observation questions- What did Israel do when Midian oppressed them, and what kinds of places did they make for themselves because of their fear?
- Why was Gideon beating out wheat in a winepress instead of out in the open, and what does that detail show about the danger Israel was living under? [39:40]
- What contrast is there between Gideon’s description of himself—“weakest” and “least”—and the Lord’s description of him as a “mighty man of valor”?
- In Judges 7, why did God reduce Gideon’s army from thousands of men to three hundred? [51:09]
Interpretation questions- Gideon asks, “If the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us?” What does God’s response show about how He receives honest questions from people who are hurting? [44:05]
- Fear drove Israel into caves, and Gideon into a winepress. What are some modern “hiding places” a person may run to when fear, anxiety, guilt, or discouragement becomes heavy? [36:31]
- God did not deny Gideon’s weakness, but He promised, “I will be with you.” How does God’s presence change the meaning of a person’s limitations without pretending those limitations are not real? [46:05]
- God reduced the army so Israel could not claim, “My own hand has saved me.” What kinds of situations today can reveal whether a person is trusting God or mainly trusting personal strength, resources, or control?
Application questions- What is currently making it hard for you to see clearly through the “windshield” of your life—fear, guilt, resentment, old failures, anxiety, distraction, or something else? What does that struggle tend to make you do? [37:48]
- When fear shows up, where are you most tempted to hide? Could it be your phone, television, work, isolation, busyness, comparison with others, or replaying the past? What would it look like to bring that hiding place honestly before God? [37:20]
- Is there a “rearview mirror” issue that you keep staring at—a regret, failure, loss, or painful memory—that is keeping you from moving forward? What truth from God’s Word do you need to put in front of that memory? [28:42]
- Gideon saw himself as too weak and too insignificant, but God called him according to God’s purpose and presence. Where do you tend to label yourself in ways that may be stronger than what God has spoken over you? [46:13]
- God does not always change the road first; sometimes He changes the driver. What hard circumstance are you asking God to remove, and how might He want to grow your trust, endurance, obedience, or courage while you are still on that road? [48:38]
- You do not have to clean every bug off the windshield at once. What is one specific step of obedience you can take this week: clean one room, address one phone habit, confess one sin, make one needed call, have one honest conversation, or ask someone for help? [56:21]
- Who is a trusted believer you could tell about that one step? How could that person pray for you and follow up with you in a way that brings encouragement rather than shame? [57:27]
