Bible Reading1 Kings 19:1–18Verse 1: Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.
[49:49]Verse 2: Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So may the gods do to me and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by this time tomorrow.”
[49:59]Verse 3: Then he was afraid, and he arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.
[50:59]Verse 4: But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he asked that he might die, saying, “It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.”
[54:03]Verse 5: And he lay down and slept under a broom tree. And behold, an angel touched him and said to him, “Arise and eat.”
[59:26]Verse 6: And he looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water. And he ate and drank and lay down again.
[59:31]Verse 7: And the angel of the LORD came again a second time and touched him and said, “Arise and eat, for the journey is too great for you.”
[59:46]Verse 8: And he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mount of God.
[01:00:18]Verse 9: There he came to a cave and lodged in it. And behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
[01:03:32]Verse 10: He said, “I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.”
[01:04:24]Verse 11: And he said, “Go out and stand on the mount before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire.
[01:05:55]Verse 12: And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.
[01:06:58]Verse 13: And when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
[01:07:04]Verse 14: He said, “I have been very jealous for the LORD, the God of hosts. For the people of Israel have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword, and I, even I only, am left, and they seek my life, to take it away.”
[01:04:24]Verse 15: And the LORD said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. And when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Syria.
[01:09:09]Verse 16: And Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint to be king over Israel, and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint to be prophet in your place.”
[01:09:09]Psalm 46:10“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”
[01:01:25]Observation questions- What happens immediately after Elijah receives Jezebel’s threat? What choices does he make concerning his servant and the wilderness? [51:15]
- What words does Elijah use to describe himself and his situation under the broom tree and later in the cave?
- Before God asks Elijah to explain what is happening, what practical care does God provide for him? [59:26]
- What powerful events take place on the mountain, and where is the Lord specifically said not to be? What finally gets Elijah’s attention? [01:06:36]
Interpretation questions- Elijah had just witnessed God’s fire on Mount Carmel, yet one threatening message led him to fear and run. What does this show about the difference between seeing God work powerfully and feeling emotionally steady?
- God does not begin by correcting Elijah’s fearful words or sending him immediately back to work. Why might food, water, and sleep be part of God’s care for an overwhelmed person? [01:00:18]
- Elijah says twice, “I, even I only, am left,” even though his fear has led him to leave his servant and withdraw alone. How can isolation make a person’s fears and hopeless thoughts feel more convincing? [01:05:04]
- God speaks through a low whisper rather than through wind, earthquake, or fire. Why might quietness and God’s presence be especially important when someone’s body and mind feel full of chaos? [01:07:50]
Application questions- When stress rises, what usually happens first in the body—racing thoughts, a tight chest, anger, shutting down, people-pleasing, or something else? How might noticing that early reaction help create space for a wiser response? [57:50]
- Is there an area of life where fear, exhaustion, or disappointment has made isolation feel safer than reaching out? What would it look like to contact one trusted person rather than carrying it alone? [01:15:05]
- God met Elijah in the dirt and gave him care before direction. What helps the body truly rest in this season: sleep, a Sabbath rhythm, walking, prayer, worship, time outside, a hobby, or something else? What is one realistic way to make room for that this week? [01:11:31]
- “Be still and know that I am God” does not mean pretending that anxiety or pain is not real. In a stressful moment, what truth about God—His presence, care, forgiveness, strength, or faithfulness—would be most helpful to remember? [01:02:21]
- God’s question, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” invites honesty rather than shame. What might it look like to pause and ask, “What is going on in me right now?” before reacting to a difficult conversation or situation? [01:13:45]
- What support might be part of a needed reset right now—talking with a trusted friend, joining a group, meeting with a counselor, seeing a doctor, or considering other professional support? What makes asking for that help difficult? [01:15:22]
- Rest and reset are not the final destination; God gave Elijah renewed purpose and sent him back into faithful obedience. After receiving rest and support, what is one loving, wise, or purposeful next step God may be inviting you to take? [01:16:36]
