#IntentionalLove
“Moving on. Here's the idea. Next slide. Since we receive what we don't deserve, we should treat others the same. Do we treat people as they are worth or as they deserve? That's the question. If you got lost in all that, come back right now. Here's the whole point of the message. To be known as a people of love is actually just a function of two things. Thing number one, we are intentional about treating people as they are worth and never as they deserve. And here's why that matters.”

#LiveBeforeDeath
“The question is how to have life after death. But the the question John's dealing with in this book is how to have life before death. How to actually live here, now, today. And here's his thesis. Ready? His thesis is the people who are really alive. They're they're they're not alive but they're actually dead. That the people who actually are alive on the inside are people who wake up every day intentional about being loving. Being known for their love. The word he uses next slide is which which means to change basis. In other words, if you're finding your life on the basis of death and you wanna know you've been moved to the basis of life, you you can do so first of all by choosing to be loving. Now, let me tell you why that doesn't matter. It doesn't matter because words matter less than how we picture words working. If I was to say,”

#KnownForLove
“My fear is is because of social media, Christians have chosen to be known for things other than that. Like, it's okay to have something and not be known for that something. Right? It's okay to have convictions that you're not known for every single conviction. Right? Like, Christians aren't supposed to be known for our opinions about climate. We don't know much about it. It's okay to have a conviction about climate, but don't be known for it. Be known for your belief in Jesus as evidenced by demonstration of love for your world. It it's okay to have convictions about sex and do have convictions about sex and do live by them. That's fine. But don't be known for them. Be known for your belief in Jesus as evidenced by demonstration of love for your world. Christians aren't supposed to be known for our convictions about climate or sex or vaccines or health or politics. Like, if you'd rather be known for how you vote than who you love, I think you've missed the point. Right?”

#LoveIsLifeNow
“Now sermons do at least two things. One, they explore what happened and two, more importantly, they explore what's happening in me right now because of what happened. So here's what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna do my best effort interpreting what I see John saying here. And then later, I'm gonna read his exact words following up from this, and I'll leave the conclusion to you. There's no vacancy in the trinity for me. Whatever the holy the holy spirit's much better at revealing truth than I am. Alright? But I'm gonna do my best here, and you just pay attention to the holy spirit. If the holy spirit makes your heart jump or urges you to say your next yes, just just do so. He he let's think about it this way. Next slide. Evidently, to John, when you love, you're experiencing some version of eternal life now.”

#ServeWithJoy
“When I pulled up today, let let's talk about the thing we all have the same amount of, time. When I pulled up today, there was a nice person showing us where to park. The best days of life church are ahead of it, not behind it, which means we need more people on team like that. Right? What what's our answer there? I can't show here's the job description. Show up thirty minutes early and be nice to people. Are you serious? Come on, man. I'm gonna God, give me more. God, give me more. What is it? Why would God give us more? We're not using what we have. Come on, bro. Open your splatting, man.”

#InvestInYouth
“Here's what it is. A couple times a month, you give a couple hours to share the love of Jesus with children. Come on. Come on, man. Open your splatchner, bro. You say, Shane, you I hate children. They're disgusting. I hate them. Okay. Then you're not our children. We we're trying to save the children from you. Is that right? But but there's a there's a youth ministry and in twenty five years, the youth ministry will be running the place. And we'll be complaining all the next generation. You can't complain about the next generation if you weren't willing to be a part of molding the values when they're moldable. Come on, man.”

#FirstJohnLove
“Christians aren't supposed to be known for our convictions about climate or sex or health or politics, and we especially aren't supposed to be known for amateur predictions of doom. Christians are supposed to be known for their belief in Jesus Right. As evidenced by a demonstration of love for your world. Now first John is this brilliant book. I would say it's inspired because if you can cover a topic this deep in five chapters, you need help. Right? It's amazing. It's an amazing book about a group of first century Christians who John was calling them back to be known, have your convictions but be known for your love. Right? And so I'm gonna read a passage out of first John three in just a second, but that's inappropriate because it's the middle of the book and you're supposed to find the context. Right? Right? But I couldn't find the context. So here's what I'm gonna do. Instead of finding the context for first John three, I'm just gonna summarize the entire book of first John in twenty five seconds. Okay? So you're gonna have to pay very close attention.”

#BecomeTheOne
“If not you're married right here, a help you. Okay? Number one, the most attractive people on earth are not the ones believing for the one thing they don't have. They're the ones fully using what they do have. They're the ones put the throttle to the ground doing every being everything they can be in the infinite possibilities God has for them. That's number one. Number two, you don't need to find the one. That's just dumb. You need to become the one, the one you're looking for is looking for. If you become that one, then that one will find you. That's number two. Number three, put your list away. Nothing objectifies a human being like making a list about them. Can you imagine this? Marriage is about mutual service and mutual passion and mutual compassion, and I just happen to have a list about everything you can do for me. Are you serious? If you're gonna make a list, make a list about what you bring to the table, not about what they bring to the table. Right?”

#LoveInAction
“``Love is a function of two things. Treating people as they are worth and not as they deserve. And when you see a need and know you can meet the need, you do something. That's it. Can you imagine if Christians worldwide were less known for our opinions about things we know very little about and more known for I don't know about all their convictions, but I know this. They believe in Jesus. They treat people as they are worth and not as they deserve. And when they see needs and know it's within their power to do something, they act that I mean, say what you want about them, but that is loving.”

#WideOpenLove
“To be fully devoted followers of Jesus. Have every conviction you want and do live by them. But be known for two of them. Your belief in Jesus as evidenced by demonstration of love for your world. What does that mean? It means intentionally treating people as they are worth and never as they deserve. And when you see a need and know you can meet the need, open your splakna all over that need. May you, my brothers and sisters, be a church of wide open splaknas till I see you at 06:00. Grace and peace.”

#LoveWorthNotDeserve
“Because when people come into Life Church, here's the question they're asking. How much of me do I have to hide for this group of people to accept me? Right? And we could do one of two things. We can pick out the bible verses that we love that disqualify people and this is what you deserve and that that that and and and you're not wrong, but you're you're not also not profoundly right either because the God revealed in Jesus chooses to treat people as they are worth not as they deserve. Whoever has the best marriage in the room, you you've learned to treat each other as your worth not as you deserve. You don't love your wife because she deserves it. There's days she will. Other days not so much. That's life. You love your wife because she's worth it. Right? You don't respect your husband because he deserves it. There'll be days he'll amaze you with his intellect and problem solving abilities. Other days, he's gonna be a flipping idiot. That's life. Right? You don't you you don't you don't respect your husband because he deserves it. You respect your husband because he's worth it to you. Right?”

#WakeUpToLove
“John John says John says, people who really live, here's what they do. They wake up being loving. What does that mean? It means they treat people as they are worth and never as they deserve. And when they see a need and know they can meet the need, they open their all over that need. People who live like that are really alive. Now to be fair, we would never say it that way. Next slide. We would say don't close your heart. Don't close your lice or your inner parts. Right? But but John's key to entering life, next slide, is next slide to open your shplagno. That people who really really live are people who live with a wide open heart. In our language, a wide open heart. In their language, a wide open bow.”

#SurrenderToGrace
“Is there a need and you know you can meet the need? There's a couple of responses today. The one most basic response is if you've never surrendered your life to Jesus to go, oh so God is not gonna treat me as I deserve but as I'm worth. And anybody with infinite power that chooses to lay his power down to treat me like that, I'd like to surrender my life to that. The I've been writing my own story and it's overpromising and under delivering, and I'd like to surrender my life to a new author of my story. And if that's you, you can surrender your life to Jesus today.”

#MeetTheNeedNow
“And then when you're there, you wonder what you missed here. Right? Or do you relate to someone who's hard to love? You know, the one you just wish God would go and take them to heaven? That one? What if we opened but but the the the most obvious application for today is simply this. Do you see a need and know you can meet it? If you're brave, I want you to pray a prayer underneath your breath right now. Lord Jesus, let no one ever reject you because of how I present you. Second prayer, is there a need that's within my power to meet it? Would you bring it to my mind? A need that's with don't burden me with things I can't do anything about. That's the temptation. To get so consumed about things we're powerless over that we lose sight of the need right in front of us. Yeah. I do. Is there a need? And I know I can meet it. Give me the courage to meet it.”

#GratitudeNotComplaints
“Hoarding. Hey. You know what else doesn't belong? Complaining. Complaining. Why? Because it's a gift. If you complain about a gift, the problems with the gift receive are not the gift giver. Right? Like if if you give someone a gift and they open it and go, really? Was that your best effort? Right? The problem is with the gift receiver not the gift giver. And quite frankly for some people, nothing's ever enough.”

#LoveOverHate
“And conversely, next slide, when you hate, you're experiencing some version of death, darkness, and decrease now. I get more questions about the book of first John than any other book in the Bible except the book of Revelation, which I find unbelievable why people are so interested in certain things. Can we just stop for a second and just let's just make a deal. We should stop arguing about the book of Revelation until we've mastered the sermon on the mount. Right? Like, come on now.”
38s
#WrestleWithTruth
“Or I hate this. I disagree with him. Also, so? Good sermons aren't meant to be like, I agree or I disagree. Good sermons are meant to be wrestled with. They're meant to make us think. So let's do that with a few questions. Next slide. Do you experience God yet leave the same? might not be that you're a bad person or that God doesn't work. It could be that you're experiencing God with a closed black nut instead of an open one. You're you're okay. It is statistically improbable that at least one of you has been in the room today, but your head is somewhere else. Right? You're here, but you're there.”

#LiveNowNotAfterlife
“I'm I'm talking about Jesus if you're not picking that. Okay. So people like, who did who what if it took? Like like Jesus lives, dies, and rises again and comes back from the dead. How much does he talk about the afterlife? None. I find that unbelievable. What I find more unbelievable is no one asked. No. What you here's what you would expect. Oh, great. You're back. What was heaven like? What was hell like? We heard you preach there. How'd your altar call go? Did you clean out hell, you rascal you? You know, when you rose from the dead tombs everywhere empty, how did that happen? All these things, they could have asked him. No one even asked. They're like, oh, great. You're back. Are we gonna take over Rome now? Is it now heaven's coming to the earth? See for us, we get obsessed about how to have life after death. Next slide.”

#DontObsessAfterlife
“And look, I'm not saying it's not important. Do sort it out. But we're over consumed with it. Like, honestly, like if I died today and and and and you came to my funeral on Wednesday, and I showed up here next Sunday, I would ruin your service. Right? It would go something like this. Oh my goodness. Shane Willard's back. Get that man a mic. Musicians, get off the stage. Like, what whatever we had planned, it's over. We're gonna have a q and a with Slido. You can upvote the questions. Right? We're we're gonna have q and a with a guy that just rose from the dead. What would the first question be? It wouldn't even be, are you okay? Are you thirsty? You look a little dusty. It it would be, no. Finally, someone can solve the mystery. What actually happens after you die? That's what would happen. If only there was a guy that lived, died, and rose again that could help us with that. Right?”
26s
#LifeNotBinary
“Come on now. But the reason is is because words matter less than how we picture words working. Next slide. For us, life and death are static images. You live or you die. And they're quite literal. Literal life, literal death, or worse, we see life and death and we think heaven or hell. That that is in in our world, we're over consumed with the afterlife.”
