The Devil's Favorite Color: Beware Off-White Deception

Peter begins with “dear friends,” beloved ones, and that word carries the same weight as the voice from heaven over Jesus at the Jordan: “This is my beloved.” Peter writes as one who knows both the grace of being loved and the danger of being deceived. The rock remembers. Peter had confessed Jesus as the Christ, then quickly became a stumbling block. Peter had walked on water, then denied Jesus three times. Peter had gone deep with Jesus into Gethsemane, then reached for a sword when sacrificial love was the way of God.

Second Peter 3 presses the church to wholesome thinking because drift is real. Satan’s favorite color is “off white,” almost pure, just a little tainted, barely noticeable unless the true color is held beside it. Falsehood often comes close to truth. The enemy’s first move in Genesis was a question, “Did God really say?” and the question was close enough to sound faithful while being twisted enough to lead toward death.

Peter points to scoffers who ask, “Where is the promise of his coming?” That off white question stirs up doubt instead of remembrance. The Lord is not slow, as some understand slowness. The Lord is patient, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance. God’s patience is not weakness, and God’s delay is not absence.

Deliberate forgetfulness creates color blindness. The text says they “deliberately forget,” and that forgetting is not innocent. It twists Scripture, and Peter’s word for “distort” carries the picture of a body stretched on a rack, limb from limb. Twisted Scripture becomes destructive theology. Off white eventually serves the old mission of the enemy: to kill, steal, and destroy.

A person floating peacefully can look up and realize the umbrella is gone, the shoreline is unfamiliar, and the body has moved far from where it started. Faith must fix its eyes on the shoreline, on Jesus, the true color.

Peter answers his own question: “What kind of people ought you to be?” Holy and godly. A color discerning people. Because the people of God know their colors, they can be grounded, guarded, and growing in Christ. Peter finished well, and his final word calls beloved friends to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
