If God Said So: Obeying God's Word

God is still speaking, even after the hurt, the failure, the leaving, and the disappointment. Proverbs 3:5 calls the believer to trust in the Lord with all the heart and not lean on understanding, because sometimes understanding becomes the greatest enemy of obedience. Peter understands fishing, but Jesus understands everything. Peter knows the water, but Jesus made the water, and the text shows a season where God’s word contradicts everything experience has taught.

Peter’s empty night becomes the place where Jesus speaks a new word. Yesterday’s disappointment cannot become today’s doctrine, because what happened before cannot cancel what God is saying now. The word “nevertheless” becomes the turning point. Peter is tired, frustrated, and looking at failure, but “nevertheless, at thy word” means God’s voice gets more weight than Peter’s experience.

Jesus meets Peter in the place of defeat and begins to reveal destiny there. Peter is frustrated with his occupation, not knowing Jesus is calling him into vocation. The place where Peter feels defeated becomes the place where Jesus reveals purpose. The empty net is not the end of the story, because Jesus is still in the boat.

The text presses the believer not to make permanent decisions in temporary darkness. Night has an expiration, and morning is not stopped by how long the night feels. Peter’s focus is on what did not happen, but Jesus is standing right there. The evidence that God has not forgotten may not be a full net yet, but the presence of Christ in the boat.

Peter hears the word, but faith has to become more than something believed. Faith has to become something done. Revelation without obedience does not produce transformation. Peter does not go back because the conditions changed or because he feels lucky; Peter goes back because Jesus said so.

Obedience produces what effort could not. The same Peter, same boat, same net, and same water become different because now there is a word on it. Human strength worked all night and caught nothing, but one act of obedient faith brought abundance. Yet the real miracle is not the fish in the net, but Jesus in the boat.

Peter leaves the biggest catch of his life because he finds something better than fish. The fish gets Peter’s attention, but Jesus gets Peter’s heart. God’s word proves trustworthy from Bethlehem to Calvary to the empty tomb. If winds, waves, demons, disease, and dead men obey him, then God’s people can take him at his word.
