Bible reading: Acts 5:17-32 (ESV)
But the high priest rose up, and all who were with him (that is, the party of the Sadducees), and filled with jealousy they arrested the apostles and put them in the public prison. But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, “Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life.” And when they heard this, they entered the temple at daybreak and began to teach.
Now when the high priest came and those who were with him, they called together the council, all the senate of the people of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought. But when the officers came, they did not find them in the prison, so they returned and reported, “We found the prison securely locked and the guards standing at the doors, but when we opened them we found no one inside.” When the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them, wondering what this would come to. And someone came and told them, “Look! The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people.” Then the captain with the officers went and brought them, but not by force, for they were afraid of being stoned by the people.
And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest questioned them, saying, “We strictly charged you not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man's blood upon us.” But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised Jesus, whom you killed by hanging him on a tree. God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”
Observation questions
- What specific command did the angel give to the apostles after releasing them from prison?
- What was the immediate reaction of the apostles upon hearing the angel’s command? [16:38]
- How did the religious leaders describe the impact the apostles were having in Jerusalem?
- What was the apostles' direct and simple response when confronted by the high priest? [23:33]
Interpretation questions
- Why do you think the apostles went back to the temple at daybreak to teach, rather than going into hiding or fleeing the city after their miraculous release?
- The religious leaders accused the apostles of intending to make them "guilty of this man's blood." What does this accusation reveal about the leaders' understanding of their own actions and the apostles' message?
- Peter's response shifts from a statement of allegiance ("We must obey God") directly into a gospel proclamation. Why is proclaiming the gospel itself an act of obedience, rather than just defending their actions?
- The sermon mentioned that "opposition doesn't mean you're wrong. It often means you're right." [35:35] Why would effective gospel proclamation often invite resistance from the world?
Application questions
- Allegiance to God outranks all other pressures. [23:33] Is there a specific area in your life right now (work, family, relationships) where you feel a tension between obeying God and pleasing people? What would it look like to choose obedience in that situation this week?
- The apostles were told to "speak to the people all the words of this Life." Who is one person in your life that God has laid on your heart to tell about "this life" in Christ? [19:18] What is one simple, practical step you can take to start that conversation?
- Delayed obedience is still disobedience. [18:50] Is there a command from God that you know clearly but have been putting off because it feels uncomfortable, risky, or inconvenient? What is the first step of immediate obedience you can take?
- The apostles' focus was on proclaiming Jesus, not defending themselves. [37:35] When you face questions or pushback about your faith, do you tend to get defensive or shift the focus to the gospel? How can you prepare to point people to Christ in those moments?
- The mission of God is unstoppable, but it is carried out by his people. [30:59] Do you live with the confidence that you are part of an unstoppable mission, or do you more often feel defeated by the culture? How can this biblical truth change your perspective and your boldness this week?
