8-30-2026 Expectations, Obedience, Integrity and Double Portion

Naaman’s story in 2 Kings 5 puts unmet expectations right in the middle of a miracle. Naaman comes as a powerful man, carrying wealth, authority, and a plan for how healing ought to happen. Elisha gives him no great event, no dramatic hand wave, and no chance to bargain. Elisha simply sends word: wash seven times in the dirty Jordan and be clean.

Naaman’s anger reveals how easily people bring cultural assumptions to God. Naaman knows fickle gods who must be influenced, impressed, or paid off. The Lord reveals himself as the one true God who cannot be manipulated and who delights to give grace freely. The Jordan becomes the place where Naaman must lay down control, status, and disappointment. Naaman’s healing comes when humble obedience replaces offended expectations.

Jesus gives the same pattern in the healing of the ten lepers. Jesus tells them to go show themselves to the priests, and “as they went, they were cleansed.” Obedience does not earn God’s power, but God often meets faith as it takes a real step. Power follows obedience. The double portion follows demonstration. Faith is risk.

Naaman’s healing then becomes more than restored skin. Naaman returns confessing that there is no God in all the world except the God of Israel. His first concern is worship: What will sit at the center of his life now? The soil he carries home points to a new altar, a new allegiance, and a new way of living in the middle of complicated responsibilities. Elisha’s “Go in peace” shows grace for a man learning to live faithfully in a difficult place.

Gehazi stands as the dark contrast. Elisha refuses Naaman’s gift so that Naaman will know God’s favor is not for sale. Gehazi sees God’s work and asks how he can use it for personal gain. Gehazi’s lie, greed, and manipulation show the danger of receiving spiritual gifts without integrity. Simon the magician in Acts 8 repeats the same error when he tries to buy the power of the Holy Spirit.

The double portion is not given for wealth, fame, control, or spiritual performance. The Holy Spirit is God’s good gift from a good Father. Christ calls his people to ask for more without fear, to take the next step of obedience, and to seek God’s kingdom rather than their own gain.

Verse 1: Now Naaman was commander of the army of the king of Aram. He was a great man in the sight of his master and highly regarded, because through him the LORD had given victory to Aram. He was a valiant soldier, but he had leprosy. [38:48]

Verse 2: Now bands of raiders from Aram had gone out and had taken captive a young girl from Israel, and she served Naaman’s wife. [38:35]
