#ReflectHeavenlyRelationship
“``Each of us has relationships in our lives where we have more influence or power, such as a parent or a boss. Right? There's also areas where we have less influence and less power, maybe as a child, maybe as an employee. And the real question is not, well, how do I how do I get into a better position? How do I get more freedom? How do I get more power? How do I get more influence in this relationship? But rather, does your relationship, the way that you are acting where the Lord has placed you, does it reflect accurately the heavenly relationship that you have with your Lord?”

#FaithTransformsPower
“We can imagine how this would have looked in Roman culture. Other than pagan masters the other pagan masters are taking advantage of their slaves. They're abusing their position. They're abusing the power that they have. And then all of a sudden, Christianity comes onto the scene and you see these Christian masters. They're caring for their slaves. They're using their position. They're using their power to actually improve the lives of those that work for them. Paul wants the world to see that the vertical relationship that all Christians have with their heavenly Lord should be drastically changing every horizontal relationship.”

#ServeWhenPowerless
“When you feel powerless, and we've all had those moments, things seem out of control. You feel like you have no option, no choice, the world is rotating around you. When you feel powerless, do you still trust, obey, serve with sincerity, and strive to do what is good? Or in those positions of when you don't feel power, do you say, well, I'm just gonna cheat a little bit here. I'm gonna underperform a little bit here. I'm just gonna complain that this isn't fair. You know what? Things would be different if I was in position of power. I would do things differently.”

#PowerToServe
“What about if you do have power? What if you're the boss? What if you're the head honcho? What if you're the parent and you can tell your kids, clean the toilet? Do you care for those that God has given you under your power? Do you know them? Do you love them? Are you doing what is best for them? Or do you threaten? Do you use them to continue to grow your own power and to grow your own image? My prayer is that each of us here, myself included, would serve God through those we serve around us.”

#ObedienceBuildsEternalFaith
“In other words, current obedience may not result in immediate benefits. This current pattern of practicing obedience is training our hearts for how we too are to live eternally with God. In other words, what Paul is saying here is that part of the importance of children obeying their parents is that it's vital for the long term development of the child, not just to make the parents' lives easier. Why is that? I believe because it mirrors the relationship that we have with our heavenly father.”

#TrainYourHeartToTrust
“This type of earthly obedience is what trains us in our spiritual obedience. To trust our heavenly father's wisdom and instruction even though it might go against what we think is best in that moment. As a child, obeying our parents is training our hearts for the rest of our lives, not just for that one moment in time. Because even when you leave that household, what you're gonna find is that God is gonna be speaking to your heart saying, I need you to obey me in this. And you're gonna say, I don't want to. Or you're gonna say, I think I know what's better for me. But if you've had this practice growing up as a young person, as an adolescent, then it becomes much easier to say, you know what God? I didn't trust my parents in this and look, they were right. And I don't understand why you're doing this, but I know that you are more better, you are more right, and you are more good than even my parents are. And that is what it's training our hearts to do.”

#RaiseWithLoveAndDiscipline
“The verb that Paul uses here for bring them up is the same one that he uses in chapter five verse 29 when he says, how we should care for our wives as we should care for our bodies. And this is the level of dedication we should show toward caring for our children. Paul is very clear here. We do this through discipline that is firm, consistent, loving, and he says we also do this through instruction by giving guidance and direction. Again, you cannot love and guide someone that you do not understand and know. So we spend time with and we know the children that we're working with.”

#SameMasterAboveAll
“Though you might have the term for master in verses five and nine and the word lord in verses in seven and eight, in Greek, these are actually the same word, kurio. And based on the context, we can see that at the first part, Paul is talking about masters as in earthly masters, and then heavenly lord or heavenly master. But I think it's interesting that the same word is being used here because he's trying to draw us to the most important detail about this relationship. Both of these parties, the master and the slave, they really only have one master, lord. We see this facet in verse nine. Paul emphasizes that both the slave and the master have the same master in heaven. The behaviors of both the slave and the master are not based on that specific relationship. They're not based on the person in that relationship, but they're based on their relationship with their heavenly master.”
