Obedience to God’s commands is not about restriction, but about living within the boundaries that bring true freedom and protection. When we follow God’s instructions, we are set free from the negative consequences of sin and poor choices, just as David and the Israelites would have been spared tragedy if they had moved the ark as God commanded. God’s boundaries are like a fence around a playground, allowing us to enjoy life fully and safely within His loving limits. [01:01:51]
2 Samuel 6:1-7 (ESV)
David again gathered all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. And David arose and went with all the people who were with him from Baale-judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the Lord of hosts who sits enthroned on the cherubim. And they carried the ark of God on a new cart and brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. And Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were driving the new cart, with the ark of God, and Ahio went before the ark. And David and all the house of Israel were making merry before the Lord, with songs and lyres and harps and tambourines and castanets and cymbals. And when they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah, and God struck him down there because of his error, and he died there beside the ark of God.
Reflection: Where in your life have you been tempted to ignore God’s boundaries, thinking your way might be better? What would it look like to trust His instructions today, even if they seem restrictive?
Loving Jesus is inseparable from obeying His teachings; true relationship with Christ is demonstrated by a life that seeks to keep His commands, not just by words or feelings. Jesus Himself made it clear that those who love Him will keep His commandments, and that obedience is the natural outflow of a heart transformed by His love and grace. This is not about legalism, but about responding to God’s love with faithful action, knowing that His commands are for our good. [49:12]
John 14:21 (ESV)
“Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”
Reflection: What is one specific command of Jesus you have been neglecting? How can you show your love for Him by choosing to obey in that area today?
When God gives clear instructions, such as the call to repent and be baptized, our response should be simple obedience rather than debate or delay. The early church responded to Peter’s message with immediate action, and their obedience led to forgiveness, the gift of the Holy Spirit, and a new life in Christ. God’s commands are not meant to be argued over or reinterpreted to fit our preferences, but to be followed as the path to blessing and transformation. [49:56]
Acts 2:38 (ESV)
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
Reflection: Is there a step of obedience—like repentance or baptism—that you have been postponing? What is holding you back from responding to God’s clear call today?
Walking in obedience to God not only brings freedom, but also leads to genuine joy and celebration. When the Israelites finally moved the ark God’s way, their worship was marked by exuberant praise and heartfelt gladness. In the same way, when we know we are living in alignment with God’s will, we are free to celebrate His goodness, both privately and publicly, without fear or shame. [01:04:06]
Acts 2:46-47 (ESV)
And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
Reflection: How can you intentionally celebrate God’s work in your life today—perhaps through worship, sharing your story, or expressing gratitude with others?
A heart that understands the blessings and freedom found in obedience will naturally overflow with gratitude to God. David made sure to honor and thank God publicly when the ark was finally brought to its rightful place, pointing all the glory to the Lord rather than himself. In our own lives, recognizing God’s provision and grace should move us to continual thanksgiving, shaping our attitudes and actions each day. [01:13:38]
Psalm 100:4-5 (ESV)
Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.
Reflection: What is one specific way you can express your gratitude to God today for His faithfulness and provision in your life?
Obedience and freedom may seem like opposites, but in God’s design, they are deeply connected. Looking at the story of David bringing the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem, we see how God’s instructions are not arbitrary rules but loving boundaries meant for our good. David’s initial attempt to move the Ark was well-intentioned but ignored God’s specific commands, resulting in tragedy. This reminds us that even when our motives are good, disregarding God’s clear instructions can lead to painful consequences. God’s commands—whether clear precepts or guiding principles—are given out of love, to protect us and lead us into the life He desires for us.
In our culture, there’s a tendency to emphasize grace to the point that obedience is undervalued. But grace and obedience are not in competition; they are partners. Grace is the foundation that makes relationship with God possible, but obedience is the expression of our love for Him. Jesus Himself said, “If you love me, keep my commandments.” Our relationship with Christ is not just about feelings or intentions, but about aligning our lives with His teachings. This is not legalism, but a response of gratitude for all He has done.
God’s instructions come in two forms: precepts—clear, specific commands—and principles—broad truths that guide our decisions. Both require our attention and respect. When we obey, we experience true freedom: freedom from the destructive consequences of sin, freedom to celebrate God’s goodness, and freedom to live joyfully within the boundaries He sets. Obedience leads to celebration, as seen when David and the people rejoiced after finally moving the Ark God’s way. Sometimes, obedience and celebration will draw criticism, but our focus must remain on honoring God, not pleasing people.
Ultimately, obedience overflows in gratitude. When we recognize that God’s commands are for our good, and that His grace covers our failures, our hearts are moved to thank Him. Like David, we are called to respond to God’s love and sacrifice with lives marked by loving obedience, joyful celebration, and deep gratitude.
There has been such an emphasis on grace for so long now that people are devaluing the importance of obedience to the teachings of God. I mean, grace is there anyway, God will forgive me anyway, I don't have to follow those instructions so closely because there's grace. And yet the scripture says that when they ask, should we go on sinning that grace may abound, the scripture says God forbid. Don't abuse the grace of God. [00:36:40] (35 seconds)
Here's the problem with those excuses: they don't eliminate the consequences from doing it the wrong way. They don't eliminate the negative consequences that come with disobedience. That's why God requires obedience, because he loves you enough to want to protect you from the negative consequences of disobedience. [00:41:18] (23 seconds)
Sin is rebellion against the clear teaching of God. And when you know the teaching, when he's presented it to you and you know what it says, and you just willingly choose to do it a different way, that's sin. That's rebellion against God. That's what condemns us. That's what separates us from a holy God. It's when we choose sin over righteousness. [00:46:58] (25 seconds)
If somebody today asks what do I need to do to get things right with God, we've got a clear teaching there, don't we? You need to repent. And very few churches are talking about repentance. They're talking about grace, and grace is a good thing, but it's only because of God's grace that when we repent there is the offer of forgiveness. [00:48:48] (23 seconds)
Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. All right, so love God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind. That's a principle that you apply to your whole life, to every part of your life. [00:53:28] (17 seconds)
If you love me, you will practice the teachings and keep all those teachings to the best of your ability, and I'll help you do that. But you make that a priority to follow my teachings. You don't take it lightly. You don't dismiss it as not important. If you love me, you will want to keep those commandments the way I've given them to you. [00:55:09] (21 seconds)
If you hold to my teaching, you're really my disciples. Then you will know what? The truth. And what will the truth do for you? It'll set you free. Well, how does the truth set me free? Well, here's how it does it. If I'm obeying the teachings of Jesus, I'm set free from the consequences of bad decisions. I'm set free from the suffering that comes with sin. I'm set free from hurting my family and my friends by my wrong actions. I'm set free to live the life that God designed for me to have with all of its protections and blessings. [00:58:20] (34 seconds)
Fear of what others may think will oftentimes keep us from celebrating the goodness of God the way we should. Instead of giving God credit for something good in our lives, we say, well, I was just lucky. I didn't deserve that, but it's a good thing. I'm thankful. Better than I deserve. Well, why? Why are you doing better than you deserve? Because of God. Because of God's blessings. [01:08:37] (28 seconds)
We, as followers of Jesus Christ, need to get more bold in offering praise, public praise, to the name of Jesus Christ. He deserves it. He's worthy of it. He deserves that honor from his own people that he died for. [01:09:05] (15 seconds)
Do we understand and have an appreciation for the blessings we have in Christ? And does it produce in us that response that more than anything else with how we live our lives, we need to do it with gratitude for the sacrifice of our father. Keeping the rules won't be a problem when you have that kind of love and appreciation for the sacrifice of God. [01:13:55] (28 seconds)
