Paul’s words in Romans 8:31-39 are comfort food for the follower of Christ. The passage is easy enough to understand, but hard to fathom: if God is for His people, no enemy can finally win against them. God does not promise that weapons will not be formed, losses will not come, or scars will not remain. God promises that nothing formed against His children will prosper in its goal of destroying them.
The cross proves that God is for His people. Paul points to the Father who “did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all,” and makes the greater-to-lesser argument: if God gave Jesus, He will not withhold anything His children truly need. God spared Isaac in Genesis 22, but God did not spare His own Son. The love of God is not guessed at through circumstances. The love of God is defined in the cross.
Paul then asks who can bring a charge against God’s elect. God justifies guilty people by giving them the righteousness of Christ, so no accusation can stick in God’s courtroom. Satan may call a believer a sinner, and the believer does not need to disagree. Christ came to die for awful people, and every accusation can become a reminder that all sin rests on Christ’s shoulders, not the believer’s.
Christ also removes every condemnation. The only One who could truly condemn was condemned in the sinner’s place. Christ died, rose, sits at the right hand of God, and lives forever to make intercession for His people. Jesus Christ is praying for them right now. The distance makes no difference.
Paul finally names tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, sword, death, life, powers, the present, the future, height, depth, and every created thing. None can separate believers from the love of God in Christ Jesus. Those hard things do not merely fail to destroy God’s people. God turns those very things into the means by which they become more than conquerors, super victorious, through Him who loved them.
God keeps the chain of salvation because salvation is His work from beginning to end. The believer is fully known and fully loved in Christ. Jesus is alive, God is not dead, and His children are safe and secure in the arms of God.

Key Takeaways
- 1. The cross proves God is for you. God’s love does not rise and fall with a diagnosis, a hard marriage, money trouble, or a bad week. The Father gave His own Son, and that gift settles the question of whether He is against His children. Christ is the proof that God will give every good thing His people need. [33:17]
- 2. No accusation can stick before God. God’s courtroom has already declared the believer righteous because Christ’s righteousness covers them. Satan’s accusations may be painful, but they cannot undo justification. The believer can answer every charge by fleeing again to Christ, who died for sinners. [37:29]
- 3. Christ was condemned in their place. Jesus took the condemnation that guilty people deserved so that no condemnation remains for those in Him. Christ did not merely die and leave His people to fend for themselves. Christ rose, reigns at God’s right hand, and continually intercedes for them. [39:28]
- 4. Hard things cannot cancel God’s love. Tribulation, distress, hunger, danger, and even death do not mean that God has stopped loving His children. God does not always remove those things, but He refuses to waste them. Christ makes His people more than conquerors through the very trials that seem determined to crush them. [43:28]
- 5. God keeps those He saves. Salvation rests on God’s work, not on the strength of a believer’s grip. The God who called, justified, and glorified His people holds the whole chain. Christ will not be let go of, and those who are in Christ will not be let go of either.
