Noah’s first act after surviving the flood wasn’t securing his future or rebuilding society—it was sacrificing precious resources to honor God. This act of worship, burning rare animals as offerings, revealed his conviction that God’s worth surpassed even survival. True worship begins when we surrender what we cling to most, trusting God’s provision over our scarcity. Noah’s altar became a catalyst for God’s covenant, proving that prioritizing God unlocks divine promises. The aroma of sacrifice still pleases God, not as ritual, but as raw surrender. [39:37]

Then Noah built an altar to the Lord. He took some of every kind of clean animal and every kind of clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar. When the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma, he said to himself, “I will never again curse the ground because of human beings, even though the inclination of the human heart is evil from youth onward.” (Genesis 8:20–21, CSB)

Today, this purpose extends to raising disciples, not just children, and stewarding relationships that mirror divine love. Fruitfulness begins when we see people as eternal souls, not projects. Day 3: Rainbows as Rebellion Against Forgetfulness

The rainbow wasn’t merely a symbol of mercy—it was a rebellion against humanity’s spiritual amnesia. In a broken world, God etched His faithfulness into the sky to confront our tendency to doubt His promises. Every storm now carries this reminder: judgment was satisfied once, but grace remains active. Yet when we reduce the rainbow to human pride, we exchange divine memory for cultural distortion. “I have placed my bow in the clouds, and it will be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Whenever I form clouds over the earth and the bow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant.” (Genesis 9:13–15, CSB)

Day 4: Throne Rooms and Hijacked Symbols

Ezekiel’s vision of God’s throne surrounded by a rainbow reveals its true purpose: to crown divine glory, not human identity. Satan’s pride distorts symbols to divert worship, but light cannot form rainbows in darkness. The battle isn’t over flags but allegiance—will we let creation’s colors point to the Creator or to ourselves? True worship refuses to share God’s glory. [55:16]

Above the expanse over their heads was the likeness of a throne with the appearance of sapphire stone. Surrounding the throne was a radiance like the appearance of a rainbow in a cloud on a rainy day. This was the appearance of the likeness of the Lord’s glory. (Ezekiel 1:26–28, CSB)

Day 5: Severe Warnings and Summer Storms

Peter’s warning about coming judgment mirrors Noah’s preaching: complacency kills. Just as floodwaters surprised a scoffing world, Christ’s return will disrupt casual faith. God’s patience isn’t apathy—He delays to save, not ignore. The rainbow’s beauty now whispers grace but will one day scream urgency. Living ready means building “arks” of gospel truth for those drowning in sin. [59:36]

They will say, “Where is his coming?” They deliberately overlook the fact that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was brought out from water and through water by the word of God. By these waters the world of that time perished when it was flooded. By the same word, the present heavens and earth are stored up for fire. (2 Peter 3:4–7, CSB)

Sermon Summary

Genesis brings Noah out of the ark into a world washed clean, but not into a world where the human heart has suddenly fixed itself. God sees that “the inclination of the human heart is evil from youth onward,” and still God makes covenant. The covenant with Noah is not a contract where God waits to see whether people hold up their side. A covenant is God putting his own name and character on the line, saying that he will keep what he has vowed.

Noah responds to salvation by building an altar. Noah takes some of the only clean animals left on the planet, kills them, burns them, and gives them to the Lord. That sacrifice is not practical on paper. It is faith. Noah is saying that God is the most important person in the room, that the first and best belong to him, and that God can be trusted to replenish what gets laid down before him. God smells the pleasing aroma and is pleased, not because humanity has become righteous, but because hunger for God is showing up in Noah’s worship.

God then reinstates humanity’s purpose. Genesis repeats the word given to Adam and Eve: “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.” God still wants the world filled with image bearers. Human life matters because God stamped every person with his image, and murder is treated with such weight because an attack on a human is an attack on the image of God. That purpose also stretches into kingdom multiplication, where God’s restored image bearers seek the lost, pray for the one far from Jesus, and long to see people move from death to life.

The rainbow becomes the sign of God’s promise. God places his bow in the clouds so that Noah and every generation after him would remember mercy after judgment. The rainbow is not first a cultural symbol. It is God’s sign of covenant grace, a reminder that water will not again destroy the earth. Yet the rainbow also carries warning, because Peter says the present heavens and earth are being stored up for fire.

Peter points back to the flood and says scoffers will forget that God has judged before. God’s patience is not weakness or delay. God is giving room for repentance. The ark points straight to Christ, and Christ is the only refuge from the coming judgment. The Lord’s Supper then becomes the deeper covenant sign: the body broken, the blood poured out, and the promise remembered until Jesus comes.

Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? It means lambs and goats, all the animals that they're able to eat. So this is a a nod towards the coming ceremonial law, the Levitical law, that there are some animals that they could eat and some that they couldn't, some that were clean and able to be used for for for for sacrifice and for eating, but others were not able to be do to to be used in those ways. And so, these animals are more precious in many ways than the others. And what Noah does is he takes some of each kind and sacrifices it to the lord. Now, I've read this my whole life. I haven't really thought about it a whole lot or what the significance of this is. But, basically, if you're tracking with me, Noah decides to take some of the only remaining animals on the planet and kill them, and then burn them, not even eat them, and give them to the lord.”

“Now think about that for Noah. He's like, man, that was really traumatic. I'm so glad you've given me that promise. But I think a lot of us have forgotten that promise. When we look at rainbows, many of us, like, no longer remember that god is promising us his grace and his mercy. And so I do think that we need to reclaim this idea of what the rainbow is ultimately about. Right? Like, what does it mean when we look upon a rainbow? It should remind us of God's glory and God's purpose and God's affection for people. We really should.”

He doesn't just want that. He also wants you and me for himself, not to share us with God. He wants to take God's place in our life.”

And so I've had some time to just take a a deep breath, you know, when I take my preaching break in the summer and just kinda, like, reflect and think about what god wants us to do. And here's what God really has put a burden on my heart over the last several weeks as I've just been seeking him and praying him is my burden is people.”

“I wanna see people fall in love with Jesus. I'm praying for deep revival in our nation where men, women, and children would turn to Jesus and fall in love with him. And I realize that all of us have people in our life that we're praying that we would see them in heaven someday. Right? You have do you have people like that, right, in your life? You have you have a grandson or granddaughter that's far from Jesus. You have a spouse that's far from Jesus. You have a brother or sister that that is, like, maybe left the faith. Maybe they're strong in their faith when they're kid, and now they're not. You have a best friend or somebody you like a lot that loves to hang out with at the gym or at work, and they're not a follower of Jesus. And you know that the Bible teaches that without the blood of Jesus applied to their life, they are going to an eternity without god.”

So we meet the Methodists there. Right? Like, we we're all thinking about food all the time. “And so I do think that there's two levels that we need to think about this as Christians when it comes to multiplication. One and being fruitful, one is simply within our families. Right? We should be people who multiply, have children, have have descendants that we raise up to know and love the lord. There's this part of being human that should be looking to replicate ourselves and have children that fill the earth with the with the with the very image of god. That's a beautiful thing.”

“However, I think it'd be kind of, like, weird if we didn't acknowledge the fact that in today's culture, in the last fifty years, the rainbow has taken on a different meaning, which has become the pride symbol. Right? That's just that's just reality. Right? But when you see a rainbow, like, okay. They're not thinking about God not destroying the world by a flood. What they're thinking is they're thinking about the LGBTQ agenda. And I just wanna be really careful as I talk about this because I know that many of us, including myself, we have friends, family members, brothers, sisters, children that would identify themselves with the pride movement or LGBTQ. what you do need to understand is the Bible points to that this is sinful activity, and it breaks God's heart, and it's not God's design. So this is not meant to be some kind of, like, clobber moment or some kind of, like, breaking people down or making people feel like they're not loved. In love, we say there's a better vision for human flourishing that God has for you because of God's creative design.”

“And then the storm goes by, we're like, that wasn't severe. It was just raining, maybe a couple lightning bolts. Right? That's not not a thing. In fact, I sometimes wonder, like, can we get back to, like, non severe thunderstorms? Like, where are the mediocre thunderstorms? Like, where are where are they, hey. This is not such a bad thunderstorm. It's just a little thunder. Because when I hear a word severe, what do I think? I think about, like, this, like a lightning bolt, and I'm, like, gonna have to hide, and everything's gonna just, like, end around me. that that that kind of language keeps us from things that really are severe and to bring us to a place of real healthy fear when things are concerning. And rainbows actually do point to a severe warning that God has placed in front of us. Peter takes this up in the book of second Peter.”

“And and and here's the thing, rainbows can't form in darkness. They can only be stolen. And so what I'm just simply just saying is that don't allow your worship to be shared with anybody or anything because rainbows aren't simply a sign of god's mercy that he won't fill the earth with a flood. They're also a warning that there is a judgment that is coming for every single person in the planet. There is. The bible tells us this. So when we look at a rainbow, what we're doing is we're looking at god's grace and mercy in the past, but also the fact that he one day will bring judgment on the earth. And it's a severe warning.”
