No Other Gospel

Life can get so routine, busy, and chaotic that something starts to feel off before anyone can even name when it happened. A marriage can feel empty, anxiety can start climbing, integrity can slip, and a once vibrant relationship with God can become robotic. Galatians begins right in that place. Paul planted these churches, proclaimed the good news of Jesus, and then heard that something had gotten off.

Paul’s tone makes the problem clear. Unlike his normal letters, he does not start by thanking God for them. Paul says he is astonished that they are so quickly deserting the One who called them by the grace of Christ and turning to a different gospel. The issue is not a small disagreement or a preference in church. The gospel itself has been changed.

The Judaizers brought Jesus plus the law. Faith in Christ was not enough, they said. Gentiles also needed to take on Jewish customs, including circumcision, in order to be right with God. Circumcision had been a real sign of God’s covenant with Abraham, a marker that identified God’s people. But Christ fulfilled the law and the prophets. The new covenant is marked by Christ’s blood, the Spirit dwelling within God’s people, and faith expressed through love.

Paul refuses to let the Galatians carry the yoke of slavery again. In Christ, neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. Jesus is enough.

The danger did not stay back in Galatia. The same false gospel still creeps into hearts, families, and churches. Jesus plus success. Jesus plus comfort. Jesus plus money. Jesus plus relationships, approval, happiness, control, politics, morality, religion, a nicer home, or a newer car. None of those things are automatically evil, but each one becomes dangerous when it turns into a requirement for contentment, identity, or being right with God.

Colossians declares that all the fullness of deity lives in Christ, and believers have been given fullness in him. Christ makes dead people alive, forgives sin, cancels the written code that stood against them, and nails it to the cross. The plus sign does not bring freedom. The plus sign brings another gospel. Jesus alone brings hope, forgiveness, purpose, identity, and peace with God.
