Paul’s question in Romans 3 cuts through every excuse: are Jews any better off than Greeks? No, not at all. The text declares that all are under sin, that none is righteous, none understands, none seeks God, and none does good. Sin is not merely a few bad choices made along the way. Sin is the broken condition into which every person is born, desperately needing a Savior whether that need is recognized or not.
The missing puzzle piece pictures that condition well. Every person keeps trying to fill the hole with jobs, family, relationships, money, pleasure, sports, approval, or whatever else promises satisfaction. Those pieces do not fit, because the hole was made for Christ alone. The culture says, “Just go with the flow,” but fallen urges are natural only because the world is fallen and broken.
The law functions like a blood test at the doctor’s office. The law does not heal the disease, but it shows the condition so that the sick person will run to the Great Physician. Paul says nobody can be justified by works of the law, because the law brings knowledge of sin. The hamster wheel of trying to do enough good never goes anywhere, because fallen people cannot earn righteousness before God.
Romans 8 shows why even outwardly decent actions cannot save. The mind set on the flesh is hostile to God and cannot submit to God’s law or please Him. A good action must line up with God’s character, but it must also be done for God’s glory. The heart exposes the real motive. Church attendance, serving, singing, teaching, and every other religious activity can still be a show when self sits on the throne.
Paul’s images expose the ruin flowing from a depraved heart. The open grave, deceitful tongue, venom under the lips, curses, bitterness, bloody feet, and lack of peace all reveal what happens when there is no fear of God before the eyes. The tongue speaks from the overflow of the heart, and a heart that meditates on evil will eventually move toward evil.
Christ is the good news in the middle of all that bad news. God shows His love in this: while sinners were still sinners, Christ died for them. Jesus does not come because people are seven or eight out of ten. Jesus comes because rebels cannot rescue themselves. His righteousness, not human effort, gives believers confidence to stand before God. The narrow gate is Christ alone, and no one comes in by another way.

Key Takeaways
- 1. The law reveals the real condition The law is not a ladder for climbing into heaven. The law is a blood test that exposes the disease already running through the soul. God uses that knowledge of sin to drive broken people away from self-trust and toward the only One who can heal them. [34:04]
- 2. Good deeds cannot replace God Good actions can look right on the outside while the heart is still chasing its own praise, comfort, or relief from guilt. God does not merely inspect what hands accomplish. God sees why the heart acted, and true goodness is aimed at His glory rather than the building up of self. [36:03]
- 3. The heart eventually reaches the mouth The open grave, deceitful tongue, venomous lips, and bitter mouth do not appear out of nowhere. Christ says the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart. Empty praise on Sunday cannot cover a life continually fed by bitterness, deceit, and self-rule. [46:50]
- 4. Christ alone gives certain salvation Human effort leaves people running on a hamster wheel, always wondering whether enough has been done. Christ died while sinners were still rebels and enemies, not after they proved themselves worthy. His finished work gives the believer grounds for knowing, not merely guessing, that eternal life is secure. [59:14]
- 5. No one enters by another way Formalist and Hypocrisy picture the danger of claiming Christ without coming through Christ. Religious words, religious activity, and a convenient path cannot substitute for repentance and faith in Jesus as Lord. The narrow gate may be hard, but every other road ends in danger and destruction.
