Psalm 12 begins with a cry that feels painfully familiar: “Help, Lord, for no one is faithful anymore.” David looks around and sees the covenant man and covenant woman gone. The people shaped by God’s faithful love have vanished, and lies, flattery, deception, and boastful speech have moved in instead. The world feels like it is coming unhinged, and faithful living can feel hard to find.

The contrast between salt and spoilage sharpens the problem. Jesus calls his people the salt of the earth and the light of the world, but a culture without salt and light decays. David sees that decay in the way people speak. Lies are not merely false statements. Their words are empty, insincere, and irresponsible. Flattery is smooth talk with a corrupt motive, studying a person’s pride rather than that person’s character. Deception speaks “with a heart and a heart,” talking out of both sides of the mouth. Boasting puts pride on full display and says, “Our lips are our own. Who can stop us?”

God’s voice enters the psalm as the answer to all that empty noise. God says that because the poor are plundered and the needy groan, he will arise and protect them. God does not speak for the arrogant, powerful, or oppressive. God speaks for those who are wounded, maligned, and pushed down.

The words of the Lord are flawless, like silver purified in a crucible and gold refined seven times. God’s words contain no deception, no hidden agenda, no empty flattery, and no impurity. God’s Word is completely reliable. Like an anvil that wears out every hammer raised against it, God’s Word has outlasted every skeptic blow.

Psalm 12 does not end because the wicked suddenly disappear. The wicked still strut around, and what is vile is still honored. David changes because he has entered God’s presence and remembered God’s promises. God’s people need truth that can be sunk into, real red meat truth that nourishes and strengthens when everything else feels manipulated, confused, or fake.

God’s Word refines the people who remain in it. The refining Spirit purifies their words, actions, hearts, and passions. The covenant man and covenant woman return. The salt becomes salty again, the light becomes bright again, and God’s people learn to stand firmly on the One whose Word will never fail.
