The better way always leaves a choice in front of people. Jesus invites his people to keep leaning into him, not to be shaped by the world, but to be transformed, moulded, and renewed as they practise his way. The choice can look very ordinary: telling the truth rather than lying, giving thanks rather than complaining, trusting God rather than worrying, and speaking life rather than joining in with gossip.
Gossip and slander never appear in a positive light in Scripture. Proverbs pictures gossip as wood on a fire: without it, a quarrel dies down. Gossip can take one small match and burn through a thousand trees, fuelling division, betraying confidence, separating close friends, and planting suspicion in hearts. Slander goes further, speaking falsely or unfairly, exaggerating motives, and pulling another person down, often while quietly lifting the self up.
The tongue carries the power of life and death, even though it is only a small muscle. Words do not stay harmless simply because they are spoken casually. They can raise anxiety, increase suspicion, and leave people carrying the weight of something that was never theirs to bear. Fingers, thumbs, phones, comments, and messages now carry that same power. Every conversation about someone who is not in the room holds a choice: will the words damage trust, or will they honour the image of God in that person?
Paul tells the Ephesian church not to let unwholesome talk come out of their mouths, but to speak what is helpful for building others up according to their needs. God calls his people beyond merely avoiding bad words. Love chooses kindness, compassion, forgiveness, encouragement, hope, and celebration. The better way is not passive neutrality but overwhelming positivity that notices courage, faithfulness, bravery, and goodness in others.
The question is not only whether words are true, but whether they are helpful, inspiring, necessary, and kind. Love also asks whether the same words could be said if the person were in the room. Believing the best and seeing the good leaves space for a why behind someone’s behaviour rather than rushing toward a negative conclusion. Christ calls his people to walk into schools, workplaces, homes, and conversations releasing courage, peace, hope, and life, turning people’s shoulders toward Jesus.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Gossip feeds fires of division Proverbs compares gossip to wood thrown onto a fire. A careless comment can keep a quarrel alive long after the original issue should have died down. Love refuses to become the match that burns through trust between people. [42:08]
- 2. Words carry life and death The tongue is small, but its impact is not small. Spoken words, typed messages, and online comments can either release fear and suspicion or courage and peace. God calls every form of communication under the lordship of Christ. [48:50]
- 3. Speak what builds others up Paul does not merely tell the church to stop speaking badly. He calls for words that meet real needs and benefit everyone listening. Encouragement becomes powerful when it is specific, honest, and attentive to the good God is growing in another person. [51:25]
- 4. Believe the best before judging A person’s behaviour may have a story behind it that is not immediately visible. Love does not deny wrongdoing, but it resists assuming motives or rushing to the worst conclusion. Seeing the good protects relationships from the quiet damage of suspicion. [57:32]
- 5. Choose hope in every conversation Every conversation offers a choice between drawing people down and building them up. Christ forms habits of speech that turn people’s shoulders toward Jesus rather than toward anxiety or accusation. A life of hopeful words becomes a witness to God’s kingdom glory.
