Acts 17:10-15 shows that opposition does not stop the gospel. God uses it to move the gospel into new places. When the brethren in Thessalonica sent Paul and Silas away by night, Berea became the next opportunity. Paul could not return to Thessalonica, but God used that trouble to give the churches First and Second Thessalonians, letters that still strengthen believers today.
The Bereans received the word with all readiness of mind, but they did not just take Paul’s word for it. They searched the Scriptures daily whether those things were so. Their nobility was not that they were better people by nature. Their nobility was that they wanted to know what God had said. They put in the hard work of pulling out the scrolls, finding the passages, and carefully examining the claims about Jesus from the Old Testament.
The Bereans show that faith must rest on what God said, not merely on what a man said. Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness. These Bereans believed God because they found that the promise of the Messiah was exactly what the Scriptures declared. The right of private judgment belongs to every believer, though it must be exercised carefully, humbly, and with respect for the work others have done. God said what He said, and God meant what He said. Scripture must not be made to mean whatever somebody wants it to mean.
The Thessalonian Jews, however, would not search the Scriptures. Hatred stirred them to walk fifty miles, spend the time and money, and create trouble in Berea. Satan uses prejudice, false religion, and hatred to oppose the word of God. Yet God uses even the wrath of men to accomplish His will. The brethren wisely sent Paul away before the city exploded, and Paul was moved on to Athens.
Paul’s removal from Berea was not defeat. Athens was the great center of Greek philosophy, and God was directing His servant toward a new battlefield. Some believers are stayers, called to build up, edify, strengthen, and patiently labor in one place. Others are movers, called to confront error, preach plainly, and stir people to face the truth. Both callings are needed. Opposition may hurt, but it may also mean that God is opening a door that would not have opened otherwise. The word of God must keep going forward, lovingly and kindly, but plainly and without fear.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Search the Scriptures for yourself The Bereans did not rest their faith on Paul’s reputation, even though Paul was an apostle. Their eagerness to hear was joined to a willingness to examine carefully. Faith becomes settled when it rests on the promise of God rather than on borrowed convictions. [52:41]
- 2. Opposition can move the gospel forward The trouble in Thessalonica forced Paul and Silas toward Berea, where many heard and believed. The trouble in Berea then moved Paul toward Athens. God can use the very thing meant to hinder the truth as the means of carrying it somewhere new. [74:51]
- 3. God’s word means what He said Private judgment does not give permission to invent meanings or force allegories into every line of Scripture. God calls believers to seek the divine truth He actually put in His word. Careful interpretation asks what the original hearers would have understood from the grammar and history of the text. [58:55]
- 4. Stayers and movers are both needed Paul’s calling brought confrontation and movement, while Silas, Timothy, and local believers helped establish churches in place. Some labor by boldly breaking ground, and others labor by patiently building what has been planted. Christ’s work needs both the outspoken witness and the steady shepherding ministry.
