#TruthMatters
“``So truth matters in relationships, and truth is at the very character of God. And so if you dig into this, this is actually courtroom language. Right? He says, do not give false testimony. So I want you to imagine if you can, standing in a courtroom before a judge, and the witness steps forward and what they have to say has the power to change someone's life forever. What they say could send someone to prison. It could tear apart a family. In some cases, it could cost someone their life. In God's community, what we see is words matter, and they still matter. They mattered then and they matter now.”

“Every lie has the fingerprints of the father of lies. You shall not give false testimony. God is trying to set apart this people to be like him and to be his witnesses in all the world, and he's truth. And so he says, part of being my people of this new nation, remember, they were slaves in Egypt. They've been set free. They're living in freedom. How do they live in this freedom? How do they be this people? Says, part of being my people is being people who do not give false testimony. It's to be truthful, not void of grace while speaking truth. Right? To be truthful. The bible says that the lord hates lying lips. He hates it.”

#LightAndTruth
“What are my words communicating which leads to the deeper reason for this command, I believe? Truth is who the lord is. John 14 verse six, Jesus says, I am the way, I am the truth, and I am the life. God doesn't just speak truth, it's his nature. God cannot lie. That would go against his being. The Holy Spirit is called the spirit of truth. And the imagery used throughout the New Testament for God and for his kingdom is light. John, the disciple will say, God is light and in him is no darkness. Says, in him was life and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness not has not overcome Truth belongs to the light. Deception belongs to darkness. Deceitfulness roams in the dark. It depends secrecy, and that is the devil's domain.”

“At some point, we've been on the receiving end of a lie. We know what it feels like, and we know what it does to relationships. Think about a moment for you, how it may be killed, intimacy, or ruined a friendship. It divides. It destroys. Now, the opposite is also true. Truth builds up even when it's hard, when it's hard to speak and hard to receive. Owning mistakes, confessing sin, checking the facts, sharing concerns. Truth matters to the lord. Words matter to the lord. We sang a song today. All authority has been given to me. Those words that come out our mouth carry authority. They carry weight. Elsewhere in scripture, it will say that we we praise the lord with our mouths, and we curse our friends with our mouth. This matters.”
