Bible ReadingRomans 8:1 “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
[31:05]John 8:1-11 “But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst they said to him, ‘Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?’ This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, ‘Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.’ And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus stood up and said to her, ‘Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?’ She said, ‘No one, Lord.’ And Jesus said, ‘Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.’”
[36:37] [40:39]John 3:17-19 “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil.”
[35:20]Revelation 12:10 “And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, ‘Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God.’”
[48:35]Observation questions- In Romans 8:1, who is the promise of “no condemnation” specifically for, and what does that phrase say about a believer’s standing before God? [31:05]
- In John 8, what did Jesus say to the woman’s accusers before they left, and what did He say to the woman after they were gone?
- What two things did Jesus make clear by saying, “Neither do I condemn you” and then, “Go, and from now on sin no more”? [40:58]
- According to John 3:17-19, why are people already condemned, and what is their response to the light that has come into the world? [35:20]
Interpretation questions- Romans 8 says there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. How is this different from saying that sin does not matter or that believers never need to repent? [46:26]
- Jesus was the only sinless person standing before the woman in John 8, yet He did not condemn her. What does this show about both the seriousness of sin and the mercy of Christ? [40:39]
- The law exposes sin but was powerless to save because of human flesh. Why was it necessary for God to send His Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to deal with sin? [43:45]
- The Holy Spirit brings correction that leads toward repentance and restoration, while Satan accuses in order to produce shame and retreat. What practical differences might help a believer recognize which voice is being followed? [49:01]
Application questions- Are there forgiven sins from the past that still make you feel as though you are under a guilty verdict? What would it look like to bring those thoughts under the truth of Romans 8:1? [55:10]
- When the Holy Spirit brings a present sin to your attention, do you tend to repent quickly, justify it, hide it, or become discouraged? What is one honest prayer of repentance you need to pray this week? [47:00]
- Jesus did not excuse the woman’s sin, but He gave her a new way to walk. Is there a pattern, relationship, habit, or temptation in your life where you need both Christ’s mercy and His call to “sin no more”? [41:12]
- Do you hear thoughts such as, “You are pitiful,” “Give up,” or “You cannot be used by God”? How can you answer those accusations with the truth that you are in Christ and no longer condemned? [47:43]
- The elephant remained tied down by a rope that no longer had the power to hold it. What “old rope”—shame, fear, failure, a past identity, or a lie—may be keeping you from living in Christ’s freedom? [52:19]
- Obedience grows out of abiding in Christ, moving from “I have to” to “I get to.” Where could you ask the Holy Spirit to change your heart so that obedience becomes a response of love rather than pressure? [45:45]
- Because Christ has brought you out of condemnation, how could you be light to someone who is living in shame, darkness, or hopelessness this week? Would it mean sharing your testimony, praying with someone, or simply speaking hope in Jesus? [56:18]
