Paul calls the church in Ephesians 5:15-17 to look carefully at how it walks, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of time because the days are evil. Life is made up of thousands of decisions, from the small stuff to the questions of calling, marriage, work, and home. Tradition, the internet, and personal preference can all offer answers, but God desires that every decision be shaped by his wisdom.
Wisdom is the careful discernment of God’s heart and the expressed obedience of his will. Discipleship does not merely ask what Jesus would do if another person were him. Discipleship asks what Jesus would do if he carried that person’s background, suffering, opportunities, and real-life situation. Jesus did not save people only for a distant eternity. Christ fills his people with the Spirit so that his wisdom and light can move into homes, workplaces, schools, neighborhoods, business, and every place where truth and morality are on the line.
James describes wisdom from above as pure, peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial, and sincere. This wisdom is not conventional wisdom with religious language added to it. This wisdom looks like Jesus. Maximilian Kolbe displayed that kind of wisdom when he offered his life in Auschwitz for a husband and father, because Christ himself gives his life for others. Wisdom is ultimately not a framework or a set of beliefs. Wisdom is a person, Jesus in the flesh.
Paul’s warning to redeem the time matters because the days are dark, rebellious, and foolish. The church becomes God’s defiant, subversive people when it refuses to compromise the truth or water down the words of Jesus. Christ calls his people to be light in the world, a city on a hill whose good works make the Father visible.
Foolishness is not merely making a bad calculation. Psalm 14 says the fool declares in the heart that there is no God. Foolishness shows up whenever a person says, “God, I don’t need you for this one,” whether in dating, money, vocation, parenting, or the future. Jesus contrasts that life with the wise builder who hears his words and does them. Storms come for everybody, and the rain reveals the foundation. Wisdom receives God’s gift, seeks his purpose, lets the Spirit test ambition, submits plans to mature believers, and obeys without delay.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Wisdom begins with God’s heart Wisdom is more than gathering information or choosing the most efficient option. God’s wisdom starts with knowing his heart and then obeying what he reveals. Jesus becomes the pattern for real life, not merely the source of religious ideas. [03:41]
- 2. Jesus is wisdom in the flesh Christ embodies everything pure, peaceable, true, lovely, and good. His cross shows that divine wisdom does not always protect self-interest or preserve comfort. His life gives believers a wisdom that can love sacrificially in a broken world. [11:14]
- 3. Foolishness excludes God from decisions The fool may never say aloud that God does not exist. The heart says it whenever it refuses to seek God in money, relationships, vocation, or family. Self-rule always promises clarity but eventually leaves life built on sand. [24:09]
- 4. Storms reveal life’s true foundation Suffering, sickness, loss, and testing come without asking whether a person follows Jesus. Jesus says that the difference lies in the foundation beneath the house. Hearing his words without doing them cannot sustain a life when the rain comes. [25:49]
- 5. Obedience cannot wait for convenience God’s wisdom calls for courage when his will becomes clear. Delayed obedience easily becomes disobedience because delay protects the desires that God is calling a person to surrender. Quiet, faithful obedience becomes a holy defiance in a dark world.
