Verse 23: After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions.
Verse 24: So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak.
[02:19]Verse 25: When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.
Verse 26: Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”
[02:52]Verse 27: The man asked him, “What is your name?” “Jacob,” he answered.
[02:56]Verse 28: Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”
[03:35]Verse 29: Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.” But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed him there.
Verse 30: So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.”
[04:18]Verse 31: The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel, and he was limping because of his hip.
[10:38]Genesis 12:1–3Verse 1: The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.”

[00:35]2 Corinthians 12:9–10Verse 9: But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.
[10:38]Verse 10: That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
[10:56]Observation questions- What does Jacob ask for during the wrestling match, and what does the man ask Jacob before giving him a new name? [02:52]
- What changes in the passage after Jacob says his name is Jacob? Notice the new name, the blessing, the place Jacob names, and the limp he carries away.
- In Genesis 12:1–3, how often does God speak about blessing, and who is meant to receive blessing through Abraham’s family?
- What kinds of weaknesses and painful situations does Paul name in 2 Corinthians 12:9–10, and what does he say Christ’s power does in them? [10:44]
Interpretation questions- Why might God ask Jacob, “What is your name?” even though God already knows? How does Jacob’s answer bring his old pattern of grabbing, deceiving, and self-reliance into the open? [02:45]
- Jacob receives the name Israel while still walking away with a limp. What does this show about God’s ability to give a person a new identity without pretending that their past pain or weakness never happened? [04:07]
- God promised Abraham that all peoples on earth would be blessed through him. How does Jacob’s rescue from Esau serve something much bigger than Jacob merely surviving one fearful night? [06:15]
- Paul says that Christ’s power is made perfect in weakness. What is the difference between honestly bringing weakness to Christ and using weakness as an excuse not to serve, love, or obey? [10:27]
Application questions- When you think of God’s blessing, do you usually first think, “God, bless me,” or “God, bless others through me”? What is one area of your life—money, work, family, time, ability, or friendship—that God may want to use as a channel of blessing? [06:50]
- Jacob’s old “operating system” was to secure life by grabbing and scheming. What old operating system do you tend to fall back on when you are afraid—controlling, worrying, pleasing people, comparing yourself, avoiding people, or something else? [10:00]
- Is there a painful weakness, failure, limitation, or “limp” that makes you feel you have little to offer God? What might it look like to bring that honestly to Christ rather than hiding it or trying to fix yourself first? [16:51]
- God’s grace gives a new identity: not defined only by sin, failure, or other people’s labels. What label from your past is hardest to stop carrying? How does belonging to God begin to change the way you see yourself? [03:58]
- A church can become a home where broken people do not need to perform or pretend. What helps people feel safe enough to be honest in a small group or church community? What could make it difficult for them? [13:21]
- Who is one person around you who may need practical blessing this week? Could you offer a listening ear, encouragement, a meal, financial help, friendship, a job connection, an invitation, or simply sit with them in a hard moment? [15:21]
- What would change this week if you began each day with the prayer, “God, use me to bless someone through me”? Where are you most likely to meet people who need God’s love—at home, work, school, among friends, or in your neighbourhood? [15:47]
