Paul moves from what has to be put off to what has to be put on. Colossians 3 does not leave the believer merely not acting like a pagan. Paul presses farther, because Christianity is not just a moral compass. Christianity is living like Christ.
Paul begins with identity before instruction. The text calls God’s people “the elect of God, holy and beloved,” and that means character flows out of who God has made them to be. God’s grace comes before conduct. Christlike virtue does not make a person loved by God. Christlike virtue grows because God has already loved and changed that person.
Paul then names the clothing of the new man. “Bowels of mercies” means a heart filled with mercy, deep compassion for the hurting and needy. Kindness seeks another person’s good. Humbleness of mind does not need to be first, noticed, or praised. Meekness is not weakness, but strength under control, and Jesus Christ stands as the greatest example of that. Longsuffering is the ability to suffer long with difficult circumstances and difficult people.
Paul takes that character into relationships. Forbearance refuses to demand that everyone do everything the preferred way. Forgiveness becomes necessary when real wrong has been done. Christ Himself sets the standard, because forgiveness is not given because the offense was small or because the offender deserved it. Forgiveness is given because Christ forgave.
Charity holds all of these things together. Biblical love in action takes the believer beyond going through the motions. Charity puts the heart behind kindness, humility, patience, forbearance, and forgiveness. Right answers without love can still damage people, because winning an argument is not the same thing as having a good relationship.
The peace of God is then called to rule in the heart. Anxiety, fear, anger, resentment, and frustration may be faced, but those things do not have to win. God’s peace governs the heart, especially because believers are called in one body. Thankfulness guards the heart from being ruled by the wrong things.
The word of Christ must dwell richly, not just pass through like a one-night stay. God’s word is to take up residence, saturating the life with truth. The word equips believers to teach, admonish, and worship with truth and grace. Finally, Paul gathers every word and deed under one test: can it be done in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God by Him?

Key Takeaways
- 1. Identity comes before Christian conduct Paul grounds obedience in who God has already made His people to be. The believer does not put on mercy, kindness, and humility to earn love from God, but because God has already called that person holy and beloved. Grace comes before conduct, and that order keeps obedience from becoming performance. [25:27]
- 2. Meekness is strength under control Christlike meekness is not being quiet because there is no strength to use. Jesus shows meekness by having all power and still holding that power in reserve for the good of others. The believer who refuses to lash out is not necessarily weak, but may be submitting strength to the rule of Christ. [28:10]
- 3. Forgiveness follows Christ’s own pattern Paul does not make the size of the offense the reason for forgiveness. Paul does not make the deserving nature of the offender the reason either. Christ’s forgiveness becomes the measure, which means forgiven people are called to release grudges instead of burying the hatchet with the handle sticking up. [39:51]
- 4. Peace must rule, not feelings The peace of God does not mean anxiety, fear, frustration, or resentment never appear. The issue is whether those emotions get to sit on the throne and decide what the mouth says or what the hands do. God’s peace brings the heart back under His rule before damage is done. [47:20]
- 5. The Word must take residence The word of Christ is not meant to be a Sunday installment that gets left alone until next week. It is meant to dwell, to stay, to saturate the life like more than a little sprinkle of seasoning. A life shaped by Scripture should not surprise people, because truth has been living there long enough to show.
