Revelation 21 sets the new Jerusalem before John as the place where God’s people live in God’s presence forever. John sees the holy city coming down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God, and every detail of the city says something about who God is and how his people relate to him. The city is called the bride because the bride is the people, yet the city is where the people gather, abide, and finally come home.

The glory of God shines through the walls, the jewels, the gold, the gates, and the measurements. The foundations carry the names of the twelve apostles, while the gates carry the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. That detail refuses to let the Old Testament and New Testament be treated like two separate stories. God has been working one story the whole time, from Eden onward, orchestrating everything to restore relationship with his people.

The gates, each made from one pearl, point to Christ as the only door and to the gospel as the pearl of great price. Jesus is worth everything, and Jesus also demands everything. The only way into the city is through him, and the only people inside are those written in the Lamb’s book of life.

The city’s measurements show something massive and holy. Its length, width, and height are equal, like the holy of holies, only on a scale beyond imagination. The holy of holies once had a curtain, sacrifices, a high priest, bells on his robe, and the sober warning that no one just walked into God’s presence “like Walmart.” Now God builds a city that is the holy of holies, and his people dwell there with him.

The city has no temple because there is no more sin to atone for and no broken relationship to repair. The city needs no sun, moon, or lamp because the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. The gates never shut because there is no enemy, no night, no threat, no curse, no anxiety, and no war.

The nations bring their glory into the city, not to earn favor, but to give God back the glory that already belongs to him. The relationship is no longer about trying to impress God or smooth over the past. God gives his Spirit now to get his people ready for the day when they will live where he is, in the full magnitude of his glory forever.
