A hardened heart cannot love what God loves. Jesus told Nicodemus that flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit births spirit. This rebirth isn’t about trying harder—it’s God replacing our unyielding stone hearts with hearts alive to His presence. Like Ezekiel’s prophecy, this transformation enables us to follow God’s ways not by obligation, but by the Spirit’s pulse within us. [56:28]
“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees.” (Ezekiel 36:26-27, NIV)
Reflection: Where have you noticed your “stone heart” resisting God’s ways this week? What would it look like to lean into your new heart’s capacity to love what He loves?
The water poured over Everly Rose didn’t save her—it marked a covenant. Like Peter’s promise to generations, baptism declares God’s claim on entire households while still requiring personal faith. It’s a visible yes to the invisible work the Spirit begins, trusting He’ll complete it. [38:52]
“Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children.” (Acts 2:38-39, NIV)
Reflection: How does the tension between God’s covenant promises and personal responsibility shape how you pray for the children in your life?
Natural birth enrolls us in death’s domain. New birth evacuates us. Jesus’ words to Nicodemus reveal salvation as an emergency extraction—not self-improvement, but a Spirit-powered relocation from Satan’s rule to Christ’s reign. The moment we trust, we’re already seated in light. [54:08]
“For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins.” (Colossians 1:13-14, NLT)
Reflection: What old darkness habit still feels like “home” to you? How does knowing you’re already citizens of light change tonight’s choices?
Human life withers like grass. The reborn carry Christ’s indestructible DNA—an imperishable seed that outlasts galaxies. This isn’t heaven’s down payment but its full reality growing within, transforming how we work, love, and face death. [54:37]
“For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.” (1 Peter 1:23, NIV)
Reflection: When did you last sense eternity’s seed pushing against your mortal limits? How might nurturing that awareness shift your priorities today?
Salvation begins with trusting Christ’s cross; sanctification continues by trusting His daily presence. Like Israelites learning to rely on manna, we’re called to abandon every idol—even good things—that compete with total dependence on Him. The journey never graduates. [01:09:54]
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6, NIV)
Reflection: What practical decision today—big or small—would look radically different if you leaned entirely on Christ’s wisdom rather than your own?
Jesus tells Nicodemus that no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again. The text insists that flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit, so entry into God’s rule is not by pedigree, effort, or religious habit, but by a supernatural birth from above. John then sets the motive and means: God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. The movement is clear. Sin’s wages are death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus. Faith calls on the name of the Lord, and the Lord does the saving. Paul adds the steadying word that the God who begins this work will carry it to completion on the day of Christ.
The doctrine of the new birth stands as the one needful thing. History shows how people can sit in pews, receive sacraments, and assume grace while lacking new life. Pietism names the remedy. The Spirit births living faith, and living faith bears fruit. Those mission friends knew themselves to be friends of Jesus and friends of each other, sent to invite many into that friendship.
The image of two realms carries the argument. Darkness belongs to the old dominion where sin rules and death pays its wage. Light belongs to the kingdom of God where grace reigns and people live. Natural birth plants a perishable seed. New birth plants an imperishable seed through the living and enduring word of God. That seed is Christ’s own life, which cannot perish and cannot make peace with sin. So the heart of stone is replaced with a heart of flesh, reconciliation replaces alienation, and joy rises where wrath once stood.
The path in becomes the path on. Belief is not a finish line but the start of an epic journey. Faith, like a muscle, grows by being used. John says those born of God learn to love, to overcome, and to refuse to make room for sin. Pentecost names the power for that life. The promised Spirit has been poured out, so trust becomes the right response. Trust Jesus to wash sins away. Trust Jesus for everything now and forever. Trust refuses idols, looks to God alone for help, and learns to live from the new heart already given.
You can have all this world has to offer. You can look good. You can have stuff. You can be a good person. You can go to church. You can be religious. But if you've not been born again, you remain in darkness. You remain in your sin in a place of judgment. And everything else is of no value. Apart from the new birth, a person is not a Christian even if they think they are. It's a transformation. Something takes place inside a transaction that god does.

And so as we hear that, the question we're gonna ask naturally is, well, how can I be born of the spirit? What must I do to to inherit this eternal life? Jesus makes that clear. You are born again through the spirit of God when you believe in Jesus Christ. When you put your trust in him to wash your sins away. Put your trust in him for your life, he does the rest. He enacts that inner birth. That's his job. Your job is to repent and to turn to him.

You can't be saved through Confucius. You can't be saved through Moses. We cannot be saved by doing good works. None of us are good enough to be saved. You can't be saved by being religious or by going to church. You can't be saved just by being baptized. You have to put your faith in Jesus, and we believe that children are protected by God's grace until they come to that age of decision. But they need to make that decision for themselves, and you need to make that decision for yourself.

Now last week, I asked you to imagine the landscape. One part's covered in darkness, the other part covered in light. The the darkness represents the kingdom of darkness of Satan where Satan rules. The light represents the kingdom of light where god rules. The way you get into the kingdom of darkness is by being born of the flesh, being born as a human being. The only way though that we can get into the other kingdom, the kingdom of light is by being born again as we just read.

The new life within you is of God himself. It's an imperishable seed. It's Christ's life. The one that life from your parents, it's human life. This new birth, it's Christ's eternal life. Flesh gives birth to flesh. Spirit gives birth to spirit. The human life is mortal. It's perishing. The new life is immortal. It's eternal. When we're in that realm of darkness, we are under condemnation. We were deserving of god's wrath for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of god, the bible tells us.

See, the problem is that we're born into a sinful world under the control of Satan, and we ourselves have sinned. And because of that, as the bible says in Romans six twenty three, the wages of sin is death. But because of God's great love for us, he sent Jesus into the world to pay the price for our sins, to die in our place. So if you've sinned greatly in your life or sinned at all, you need a sacrifice, and Jesus is that sacrifice.

But Jesus was telling Nicodemus, a very faithful law keeping Jew, that obeying the law is not enough. To see this kingdom, to enter this kingdom, you had to be born again, which shocked Nicodemus because he thought he was on his way to glory, to to heaven because of all his good works. The kingdom of god is god's rule, and those who enter his rule, enter to life and wholeness. But a person can only enter through a supernatural new birth brought about by the holy spirit.

Paul said, if you declare with your mouth Jesus is lord, you're saying, yes. You're the lord. You're the king. You're the ruler of the universe. You're my lord. I believe that god raised you from the dead. I believe that in my heart. I call upon you. His grace will come upon you, and he will do the rest. And there's no other name. Peter says in acts four twelve, salvation is found in no one else.
