Paul opens Romans by putting the gospel right in the center. John shows who to trust, Acts shows how to live it out, and Romans shows why it all works. Romans is a tomahawk steak kind of book, full of truth about sin, grace, faith, righteousness, justification, salvation, sanctification, the Holy Spirit, and the Christian life. Doctrine is not just big church language. Doctrine is what believers believe and why they believe it, because right doctrine leads to right living.
The gospel is not simply about getting saved so that a person can avoid hell and then live however they want. The gospel is about total life transformation. Jesus changes people from the inside out as they daily walk in submission to his lordship. Paul himself proves that reality. Saul was hostile to Christians, but an encounter with Jesus turned him into Paul, a servant, apostle, church planter, and missionary.
Romans 1:1-17 establishes that the gospel is from God, about Jesus, for everyone who believes, and reveals the righteousness of God. God did not come up with the gospel as an emergency response after things went wrong. God promised it beforehand through the prophets, from the promise of the serpent-crusher to Abraham’s blessing for all nations, to Isaiah’s suffering servant. The gospel is God’s plan, God’s promise, and God’s work.
Jesus stands at the center of that gospel. Paul identifies him as descended from David according to the flesh, truly human, and declared in power to be the Son of God through the resurrection. Christianity does not begin with what people do for God. Christianity begins with what God has done through Jesus Christ.
The gospel crosses every human dividing line. Jews and Gentiles, Greeks and barbarians, educated and uneducated, rich and poor, religious and irreligious all come to the foot of the cross the same way: sinners in desperate need of a Savior. No one is good enough to avoid needing grace, and no one is too far gone for Jesus to save. Believing is not merely knowing facts about Jesus. Believing means trusting and depending on him.
God’s righteousness creates the enormous problem Romans will unpack: God is righteous and people are not. God is the standard of what is right in character, judgment, action, command, and justice. The gospel answers how unrighteous people can be made right with a righteous God. It calls for a personal response, not religious performance. It also frees believers from shame, because the power to save is in the gospel, not in a person’s ability to present it perfectly.

Key Takeaways
- 1. The gospel begins with God God’s saving work was never Plan B. Scripture tells one unfolding story of God acting for sinful people through his Son. That means nobody gets to rewrite the gospel around personal preference, cultural pressure, or religious effort. [17:44]
- 2. Jesus is the center, not self Jesus is fully human, descended from David, and fully God, publicly revealed in power through the resurrection. Christianity begins with what God has done through Jesus, not with what a person can accomplish for God. Self-salvation always crushes people under a weight they cannot bear. [20:58]
- 3. Faith is trusting, not knowing Accurate information about Jesus is not the same thing as saving faith. Demons know certain true things about God, yet they do not trust or submit to Christ. Faith moves the gospel from something known to someone personally trusted. [40:14]
- 4. The cross levels every resume The gospel does not say everybody is equally good. The gospel says everybody is equally unable to save themselves, while Jesus is sufficient for everyone who believes. Pride has no room at the foot of the cross, and neither does hopelessness. [27:40]
- 5. God’s power removes gospel shame Paul was not ashamed to proclaim a crucified Jewish carpenter as Lord in the center of Roman power. The gospel saves because God is powerful, not because believers give perfect answers. Faithfulness means sharing Christ when opportunities come and leaving the outcome with God.
