Impact FXBG | Nehemiah: It's Time To Build

Nehemiah 9 brings God’s people to the right place after the rebuilding is done. The city has walls again, the temple is there, and the people have celebrated God’s faithfulness. The text now shows them fasting, wearing sackcloth, putting dirt on their heads, separating themselves, and confessing sin. Their repentance is not casual. It is a real moment of mourning over personal sin, family sin, and the long pattern of rebellion that had marked God’s people.

The book of the Law sits at the center of their gathering. God’s people spend hours hearing Scripture, confessing, and worshiping because the Bible has to be between people for discipleship to actually happen. The Word teaches the Word. Nehemiah’s prayer then gives an Old Testament account of the Old Testament, starting with creation and moving through Abraham, Moses, the wilderness, the promised land, rebellion, discipline, and mercy.

God is eternal, while everything else in life is temporary. God has no rival, even though hearts keep building idols out of careers, money, relationships, success, technology, and whatever else promises satisfaction. Jesus cannot simply become another item on the religious salad bar of life. God alone made heaven, earth, the sea, and all that humanity has not even discovered yet. He does not coexist with idols as equals.

God proves Himself to be a promise keeper through Abraham, a loving Deliverer through the Red Sea, and a gracious Guide through the wilderness. His rules are right rules, His laws are true, and His will is not hidden behind some secret level or cheat code. God plays seek and find. He gives His Word so that those who seek Him can know Him and walk in the way of life.

Israel’s story also tells the truth about human hearts. God provides, people sin, God provides again, and people sin again. The stiff neck keeps saying, “God, I’ll take it from here.” Yet God remains ready to forgive, gracious, merciful, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love, generous, patient, faithful, loyal, and constant. His discipline is not proof that He has stopped loving His people. His discipline is sanctification.

Jesus brings this whole story to the table. His body was broken for dissatisfied people looking everywhere else for satisfaction. His blood was poured out for stubborn, rebellious people who need mercy. Communion calls hearts to stop digging in, confess sin, receive grace, and find utter satisfaction in Christ.
