Nehemiah 9

Nehemiah 9 puts the danger of surface level faith right out in the open. Israel has rebuilt, gathered, heard the Book, worshiped, fasted, and put dust on their heads. Yet the text will not let worship remain a routine or a religious habit. God’s people stand before Him long enough to remember who He is and to tell the truth about who they have been.

The prayer keeps moving back and forth between “You” and “they.” God made heaven, called Abraham, saw affliction in Egypt, divided the sea, gave His Law, sustained His people, and gave them kingdoms and land. Israel acted proudly, hardened their necks, refused to obey, and wanted to go back into bondage. God’s faithfulness stands in sharp contrast to human unfaithfulness.

The greatness of God brings more than a surface image of God sitting on a shelf, ready to be picked up when life gets hard. The “great, mighty, and awesome God who keeps covenant and mercy” calls for adoration that rehearses His wonders, His providence, His grace, and His goodness. Quiet before God gives the heart room to meditate instead of constantly taking in more noise.

Confession brings the people to say what is hardest for anybody to say: “God, You were right, and I was wrong.” Sin cannot be healed while it stays hidden behind a closed door. Like the bad odor coming from a closet in the living room, sin eventually affects the whole house. Confession names sin honestly, acknowledges that God has dealt faithfully while His people have dealt wickedly, and opens the way toward humility and wholeness.

Israel’s confession does not stop at sorrow. The people call themselves servants, recognize their insufficiency, and pledge their allegiance to the Savior. Their written covenant is more than a contract or a name on a church roll. A covenant says, “This is what I am going to do, no matter what,” because God is greater than works, credentials, religious labels, and the things human hands can build.

God’s majesty brings every false confidence down low. Repentance begins where people quit trying to fix themselves and come honestly before the God who is gracious, merciful, and faithful.
