Spiritual discernment is essential for every believer, as we are constantly surrounded by many voices and influences—some from God, some from the world, and some from the enemy. The Bible instructs us not to accept every spirit or message at face value, but to intentionally test and examine what we hear, especially when it comes to spiritual matters. This means asking whether a teaching, prompting, or influence truly aligns with the truth of Jesus Christ and the will of God. The Holy Spirit is our helper in this process, guiding us to recognize what is from God and what is not, so that we are not deceived by appearances or persuasive words. As we grow in discernment, we become more attuned to the voice of our Shepherd and less likely to be led astray by false prophets or hidden agendas. [07:11]
1 John 4:1 (ESV)
"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world."
Reflection: Think of a recent situation where you felt pulled in different directions by advice, opinions, or spiritual influences. How can you intentionally pause and ask the Holy Spirit to help you test and discern the true source before you act or respond?
A discerning heart is not passive or content with surface-level understanding; it actively seeks knowledge and wisdom. The wise person is always learning, asking questions, and desiring to understand more deeply, while the foolish person is satisfied with shallow or even harmful influences. Discernment grows as we pursue God’s truth, study His Word, and seek understanding in all areas of life. This pursuit is not just for spiritual matters but also for practical decisions, relationships, and daily challenges. By seeking knowledge, we position ourselves to make wise choices and avoid the pitfalls that come from ignorance or folly. [38:07]
Proverbs 15:14 (ESV)
"The heart of him who has understanding seeks knowledge, but the mouths of fools feed on folly."
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you have been content with “just getting by” instead of seeking deeper understanding? How can you take a step today to pursue knowledge and wisdom in that area?
Sometimes God is at work in ways we do not immediately recognize, and our lack of discernment can cause us to miss, resist, or even oppose His activity. Like the disciples who mistook Jesus for a ghost on the water, or Eli who misjudged Hannah’s prayer, we can misinterpret God’s presence or the intentions of others if we are not spiritually attuned. Discernment helps us to recognize when God is moving, even if it looks unfamiliar or comes through unexpected people. It also guards us from misjudging others’ motives or missing out on what God wants to do in and through us. [39:53]
Luke 24:31-32 (ESV)
"And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, 'Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?'"
Reflection: Recall a time when you realized after the fact that God was working in a situation or through a person you didn’t expect. How can you be more open and attentive to God’s movement in your life this week?
Spiritual discernment is not just about recognizing truth from error, but also about perceiving the spiritual realities behind situations and people. Paul’s encounter with the slave girl in Acts 16 shows that sometimes, even when words sound right, the spirit behind them may be wrong. True discernment, empowered by the Holy Spirit, enables us to see beyond appearances, address spiritual opposition, and act with authority in Jesus’ name. This gift is vital for protecting ourselves and others from deception, and for advancing God’s purposes in our communities. [45:42]
Acts 16:16-18 (ESV)
"As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling. She followed Paul and us, crying out, 'These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation.' And this she kept doing for many days. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, 'I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.' And it came out that very hour."
Reflection: Is there a situation or relationship in your life where things seem “off” even though everything appears fine on the surface? Ask God to give you spiritual discernment and the courage to respond as He leads.
Our discernment can be clouded or dulled by personal biases, wounds, misplaced loyalties, or unchecked emotions like love, jealousy, or vengeance. These blind spots can cause us to misjudge others, miss God’s work, or make poor decisions. It is important to regularly ask God to calibrate and refine our discernment, exposing any areas where we are not seeing clearly. By humbling ourselves before the Lord and seeking His perspective, we can overcome these obstacles and grow in wisdom, making decisions that honor Him and bless those around us. [57:47]
Psalm 139:23-24 (ESV)
"Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!"
Reflection: What personal bias, wound, or emotion might be clouding your discernment right now? Take time to ask God to reveal and heal any blind spots so you can see people and situations with His clarity.
Discernment is a vital key for navigating both our spiritual journey and our everyday lives. It is the intentional process of becoming aware of how God is present, active, and calling us as individuals and as a community. Discernment is not simply about confirming our hunches or intuitions, but about sifting through the many voices and choices that surround us, learning to recognize the voice of the Lord above all others. The Holy Spirit is our guide in this, helping us to test the spirits and distinguish between what is good, what is best, and what is merely a distraction or even a deception.
Scripture gives us many examples of discernment in action. Solomon, when given the opportunity to ask God for anything, chose wisdom and discernment to lead God’s people. Jesus Himself demonstrated discernment when He rebuked Peter, recognizing that the words spoken were not aligned with God’s will, even though they came from a place of love. Paul, too, discerned the spirit behind the words of the slave girl in Acts 16, understanding that not every voice—even those that sound affirming—is from God.
Discernment is needed in every area of life: in our finances, health, relationships, and decision-making. It helps us recognize the difference in people, their abilities, and their motives. Trust is something that must be discerned and earned, not given freely without wisdom. In the workplace, in teaching, in parenting, and in leadership, discernment enables us to match needs with abilities, to motivate effectively, and to nurture the unique personalities and gifts of those around us.
Yet, discernment can be clouded. Love, loyalty, wounds, offense, or even peer pressure can dull our spiritual perception, causing us to misjudge situations or people. Sometimes, we may miss what God is doing because we are blinded by our own agendas or hurts. That is why it is essential to continually seek the Lord, asking Him to calibrate and refine our discernment, so that we can walk wisely, recognize His movements, and avoid the snares of the enemy.
Discernment involves sifting through the choices and voices that surround us, right? So in life, we have to discern the voices, right? There's a lot of voices out here. There's a lot of people wanting our attention, a lot of things wanting our attention, a lot of voices trying to get us to move a certain direction. And discernment gives us the ability to choose which voice we're going to listen to.

There could be an underlying agenda in someone's life that you've got to be able to discern and pick apart as you move through life because that happens. Some guys come in to find a wife. They'll act good for about five months, and they get a wife, and then they're off the course. So sometimes you've got to discern the spirit and see through the garbage of the systems of the world and attempts of even the devil.

The timing is important. Lord, there's so many things to discern. Discerning people's hearts. Discerning, Lord, in the natural, discerning. Is this a safe environment that I'm moving into? Is this opportunity a good opportunity, or is it an opportunity that's going to fail? Lord, discernment in every area is so important.

Your trust level, you need discernment with your trust level. So think about that whenever you're, you know, you're, you're, you're able to trust people at certain, to a certain level. Now, forgiveness is, is freely given, we forgive, but trust is something that has to be earned in our lives. So if there's a broken trust, a broken, you know, a relationship that goes awry because of a broken trust, trust is something that you have to discern, you know, how much you can trust someone.

Have you ever had those decisions that either way seems right? You ever had that? And, and you've kind of had to dig down, like, maybe you have two really good opportunities there in front of you, but then you begin to test, like, like, Lord, which one is your will? Both of these are okay, but, you know, what, what is, what is really your will for my life, right? And that good, good, good consideration there for discernment.

Discernment also is needed for why are things happening? You know, why is this happening to me? Why is this happening in my life? Discernment helps us to, to understand that and understand the depths of why is this happening?

If you tell each other you're wrong all the time, you're never going to motivate them to do something, right? But if you tell them, you know, you appreciate them and you're thankful for them, different, different levels of, of communication, you know, can change that and help in that.

You need to have that on your, in your vocabulary. In the name of Jesus, come out devil, right? Christians don't understand that that's our power. That's where we need to live because spirits are always trying to get in, in the mix, right?

When you become the enemy for speaking the truth, someone is trying to hide dysfunction or an evil motive, right? Isn't that powerful, man? Wow. When you become the enemy for speaking the truth, someone is trying to hide deception or dysfunction.

Sometimes we just, we, we just need to go before the Lord. I've done this. God, where's my discernment out of order? You know, and where's my perception need refined, need touched by you? And, and there could be something in, in you, Ms. Ann, in us that can cause us to, to, to take stuff wrong and discern people wrong. You know, we can discern, we can discern people's intent wrong.
