Navigating Cultural Shifts: Upholding Christian Values

Summary

In today's exploration of our cultural landscape, we delved into the profound shifts occurring within society and the implications these have for us as Christians. We began by examining the work of Charles Murray, who argues that America is "coming apart" due to the erosion of foundational virtues such as honesty, industry, marriage, and religion. This decline in virtue, as Murray suggests, signals a potential collapse unless a significant cultural awakening occurs. This perspective is echoed by Marcello Pera, who warns of a grave cultural and political crisis stemming from a departure from Christian values.

We then explored how the redefinition of human civilization is taking place, particularly through the lens of sexual egalitarianism. This movement challenges the traditional understanding of the image of God and seeks to replace it with a new societal framework. The rapid cultural changes, including the normalization of behaviors once considered taboo, are reshaping societal norms and values. This shift is not merely about individual rights but represents a broader ideological transformation that impacts all aspects of life, including education and legislation.

The sermon also highlighted the dangers of relativism and the elimination of boundaries, which are central to pagan worldviews. This denial of distinctions between good and evil, truth and falsehood, and even between humans and animals, leads to a moral and spiritual crisis. The push for equality, while seemingly noble, often results in the leveling of all distinctions, leading to a culture where traditional moral values are undermined.

As Christians, we are called to stand firm in our faith amidst these cultural shifts. The apostle Paul's words about being "given over" to dishonorable passions serve as a stark reminder of the consequences of abandoning God's truth. In this challenging environment, we must resist the temptation to conform and instead uphold the values and truths that define our faith.

Day 1: The Erosion of Foundational Virtues
The decline of foundational virtues such as honesty, industry, marriage, and religion signals a potential cultural collapse. Without a significant awakening to these principles, society risks losing its moral compass. The erosion of these virtues is not just a societal issue but a spiritual one, as it reflects a departure from the values that have historically guided human behavior and community life. This decline can lead to a society where moral relativism prevails, and the lines between right and wrong become blurred. As Christians, recognizing this erosion is crucial to understanding the broader cultural shifts and the need for a return to these foundational virtues. [01:19]

"Thus says the Lord: 'Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.' But they said, 'We will not walk in it.'" (Jeremiah 6:16, ESV)

Reflection: In what ways have you noticed a decline in foundational virtues in your own life or community? How can you actively work to restore these virtues in your daily interactions?

Day 2: Redefining Civilization Through Sexual Egalitarianism
The movement towards sexual egalitarianism challenges the traditional understanding of the image of God and seeks to establish a new societal framework. This shift is not just about rights but represents a broader ideological transformation that impacts all aspects of life, including education and legislation. The redefinition of civilization through this lens can lead to a society that prioritizes individual desires over collective moral standards. As Christians, it is essential to discern these changes and understand their implications for our faith and community life. [04:30]

"For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened." (Romans 1:21, ESV)

Reflection: How does the movement towards sexual egalitarianism challenge your understanding of God's design for humanity? What steps can you take to align your beliefs with biblical teachings on this issue?

Day 3: The Crisis of Relativism and Boundary Elimination
The denial of distinctions between good and evil, truth and falsehood, and even between humans and animals leads to a moral and spiritual crisis. This relativism undermines traditional moral values and creates a culture of confusion. The elimination of boundaries, which are central to pagan worldviews, can result in a society where anything goes, and moral absolutes are dismissed. As Christians, it is vital to uphold the truth of God's Word and resist the temptation to conform to a culture that denies these distinctions. [12:01]

"Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!" (Isaiah 5:20, ESV)

Reflection: In what areas of your life have you been tempted to blur the lines between right and wrong? How can you seek God's guidance to maintain clear moral boundaries?

Day 4: The Dangers of False Equality
The push for equality often results in the leveling of all distinctions, leading to a culture where traditional moral values are undermined. This false equality can lead to a society where anything goes, and moral boundaries are erased. While equality is a noble pursuit, it must not come at the expense of truth and righteousness. As Christians, we must discern the difference between true equality, which honors God's design, and false equality, which seeks to erase God-given distinctions. [14:00]

"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." (Romans 12:2, ESV)

Reflection: How can you promote true equality in your community while upholding biblical values? What practical steps can you take to ensure that your pursuit of equality aligns with God's truth?

Day 5: Standing Firm in Faith Amidst Cultural Shifts
Amidst these cultural shifts, Christians are called to stand firm in their faith. The apostle Paul's warning about being "given over" to dishonorable passions serves as a reminder of the consequences of abandoning God's truth. In a world that often pressures believers to conform, it is crucial to remain steadfast in the values and truths that define our faith. This requires a deep commitment to God's Word and a willingness to stand against cultural trends that contradict biblical teachings. [23:22]

"Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain." (1 Corinthians 15:58, ESV)

Reflection: What cultural pressures are you currently facing that challenge your faith? How can you equip yourself to stand firm in your beliefs and remain faithful to God's truth?

Quotes

One of the studies that is quite shocking is the work of the political scientist Charles Murray, I recommend reading this book entitled, 'Coming Apart: The Story of White America, 1960-2010: Charles Murray'. His thesis is not encouraging; you see the title of his book -- America is coming apart. [00:01:02]

The four principles of cultural success from America's founding; and they are -- honesty, industry, marriage and religion; summed up in the term 'virtue'. How is virtue doing in the present society is really what he says. George Washington in his farewell address argued that so long as they remain any virtue in the body of the people, then we will never fall into monarchy, oligarchy, aristocracy or other despotic or oppressive forms. [00:01:41]

And unless a great awakening takes place that rediscovers these founding principles, all is lost. But can we expect this to happen? And if we cannot, indeed all is lost. For Murray, really doesn't look either at the religious side of things. It's only the sort of moral habits of the people. [00:02:53]

The political philosopher and former president of the Italian Senate Marcello Pera, stated "The apostasy from Christianity is exposing the entire West to the risk of a grave cultural and political crisis and perhaps even to the collapse of the civilization." So here you have people from Italy, the sociologists arguing that our culture is lost. [00:03:41]

The moral crusade for sexual egalitarianism, which I think is the tip of the spear is running roughshod over the very notion of the image of God. It is indeed the embodiment and sacrament of Oneism. Melanie Phillips who I cited earlier, who talked about the attack on Western civilization argues indeed, that sexuality is the battering ram against the fundamental tenets of Western culture in order to destroy it and replace it with a new type of society altogether. [00:04:37]

And this revolution is taking place within a single generation. We used to say, "You're on the wrong side of history," actually that means "you're on the wrong side of the latest news cycle." Things are happening so much. And the culture is falling apart morally. I read an article which said, "Most industry watchers say -- fornication has never been as widely on display on television ever," and you know that. [00:05:19]

The reason is that what society allows must become normative in the way we run society. So by redefining marriage as the union of any two people (and eventually we will see this extended to any number of people), the belief in exclusive heterosexual monogamy is repudiated by federal law, and the normativity of pansexuality is affirmed by the highest laws of the land. [00:08:33]

And so we see the invasion of the schools, the brainwashing of the next generation is underway. In the subtle introduction both of Eastern spirituality and of what we call, Pansexuality. This is really a recruitment technique for the changing of the minds of the next generation of citizens; who are, sort of, forced to believe that any sexuality is OK, you see. [00:09:31]

And you find yourself, you see, in a totally immoral culture. In the name of the rights of some, you have relativized everything. And you are discriminatory when you affirm your views of things and you must be silenced. And that's really I think where we're going and you've seen it on numerous occasions in the last few years. [00:14:04]

In terms of epistemology (the theory of knowledge), according to postmodernism -- "Distinctions between 'true' and 'false' must be abandoned as socially constructed illusions." So at the philosophical level, we're getting rid of the binary of 'true' and 'false'. In terms of science, the human is being joyously celebrated as co-creator of the cosmos. [00:16:10]

The apostle Paul concludes as he looks at the Roman Empire, "For this reason, God gave them over to dishonorable passions. And to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done." Is our culture at this stage? -- the stage of being "Given over?" Alas, because of the intimidation factor, a number of Christians are tempted to give in. Let's not do that. [00:23:16]
