Church splits can be either healthy or unhealthy, much like cell division. A healthy split can lead to two thriving congregations, while an unhealthy one can spread dysfunction. The key is the heart and actions of those involved. When a church faces a potential split, it is crucial to examine the motivations and methods of those leading the change. Are they seeking to glorify God and build His kingdom, or are they driven by personal agendas? A healthy division should be approached with prayer, wisdom, and a focus on God's glory, ensuring that both congregations can flourish and serve their communities effectively. [06:19]
"For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere." (James 3:16-17, ESV)
Reflection: Is there a situation in your life where you need to discern whether a division is healthy or unhealthy? How can you seek God's wisdom in this matter today?
Day 2: Ethical Conduct in Church Transitions
It's unethical to "steal" members from another congregation. Instead, we should strive to build on new foundations, as Paul did, ensuring that any transition glorifies God and demonstrates the fruit of the Spirit. When a new church is planted, it should focus on reaching new people and serving the community rather than drawing members away from existing congregations. This approach honors God and fosters unity within the broader body of Christ. By building on new foundations, we can create vibrant communities that reflect the love and grace of Jesus. [09:19]
"So I make it my ambition to preach the gospel, not where Christ has already been named, lest I build on someone else's foundation, but as it is written, 'Those who have never been told of him will see, and those who have never heard will understand.'" (Romans 15:20-21, ESV)
Reflection: Are there areas in your life where you might be tempted to take shortcuts or act unethically? How can you commit to building on new foundations today?
Day 3: God's Purpose in Conflict
In times of church conflict or transition, God wants to work through His people to bring glory to Himself, while Satan seeks to disrupt and destroy. Our goal should be to further God's work and purpose. When faced with conflict, it is essential to remain focused on God's mission and seek His guidance. By doing so, we can overcome the enemy's attempts to sow discord and instead become instruments of peace and reconciliation. This requires humility, prayer, and a willingness to listen to the Holy Spirit's leading. [11:14]
"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil." (Ephesians 6:10-11, ESV)
Reflection: How can you actively participate in God's work and purpose in the midst of conflict? What steps can you take today to stand firm against the enemy's schemes?
Day 4: Approaching Church Splits with Wisdom
Church splits can be a blessing or a curse, depending on how they are handled. It's essential to approach them with wisdom, grace, and a focus on God's glory. When a church faces division, it is crucial to seek God's guidance and approach the situation with humility and love. By doing so, we can ensure that the outcome is one that honors God and strengthens His kingdom. This requires open communication, a willingness to forgive, and a commitment to unity. [12:01]
"Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom." (James 3:13, ESV)
Reflection: Is there a situation in your life where you need to approach with more wisdom and grace? How can you focus on God's glory in this situation today?
Day 5: The Global Family of Believers
The enduring word family is global, and we are grateful for the fellowship and friendship we share. We love to give back to our community, as demonstrated by today's giveaway. The body of Christ is a diverse and global family, united by our shared faith in Jesus. This unity allows us to support and encourage one another, regardless of geographical or cultural differences. By giving back to our community, we demonstrate the love of Christ and strengthen the bonds of fellowship within the body. [01:00:37]
"For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ." (1 Corinthians 12:12, ESV)
Reflection: How can you contribute to the global family of believers today? What specific actions can you take to support and encourage others in your community?
Sermon Summary
Today, I am broadcasting from the west coast of Sweden, at my mother and father-in-law's home. Despite the long journey from the United States, I am thrilled to be here and to engage with you in our weekly question and answer session. Today, we have a special surprise: a giveaway of three enduring word coffee mugs. To participate, viewers need to comment in the live chat with their location and stay until the end of the program to see if they win.
Our lead question today comes from Johan, who is concerned about a potential church split. An assistant pastor is leaving to start a new church nearby, and Johan is unsure if this is a positive or negative development. Church splits can be complex, sometimes resulting from dissatisfaction, but they can also be a natural and healthy division, much like cell division in biology. A healthy split can lead to two thriving congregations, while an unhealthy one can spread dysfunction. The key is the heart and actions of those involved. It's crucial to avoid unethical practices, such as "stealing" members from another congregation. Instead, we should strive to build on new foundations, as Paul did, and ensure that any transition glorifies God and demonstrates the fruit of the Spirit.
In times of church conflict or transition, we must be aware that God wants to work through His people to bring glory to Himself, while Satan seeks to disrupt and destroy. Our goal should be to further God's work and purpose, looking for the fruit of the Spirit and the nature of Jesus Christ in all we do. Church splits can be a blessing or a curse, depending on how they are handled. It's essential to approach them with wisdom, grace, and a focus on God's glory.

Sermon Clips
I would just say this whether or not a split is good or bad because I've seen both. I've seen splits that end up being a tremendous blessing for the community where instead of one church one congregation that's growing and thriving and really doing good in the community now you have two churches. [00:07:00]
The key is the heart and actions of those involved. Listen I won't say that it's only the heart because there's sometimes people who have a fairly good heart but they're really unwise or unthoughtful in their actions and end up causing a lot of trouble a lot of difficulty. [00:08:06]
It's often wrong before God and unethical to steal people from an existing congregation and then to start a competing church. Now look I if I were to say that or write that out I would put steal people in quotation marks because in a sense the Sheep of God's pasture they can't be stolen. [00:08:35]
In times of conflict or transition at a church, you need to always remember that any time of conflict or transition, it's always a time when number one God wants to do his work through his people to bring himself Glory. Isn't that obvious? God is always looking for an arena for Willing vessels. [00:10:24]
We also need to be very grown up about this and realize that times of conflict or transition at a church are also times when Satan really wants to tear down the work of the church. Look, Satan is working for any opportunity he can find to sort of dismiss and push away the work of the Lord. [00:11:09]
We should determine that God helping us that we're going to be instruments to further God's work and purpose which oftentimes can be measured by looking for the fruit of the spirit and by looking for the nature of Jesus Christ in everything that we do. [00:11:32]
I've seen some church splits that end up being a wonderful blessing for a community and for the individual congregations involved. I've seen other ones that have sown the seeds of bitterness and distrust for years and years to come and friends are just it doesn't have to be that way. [00:12:01]
I think that it will be built as a memorial, a memorial recognizing God's work in the past. People will be called to remember the great things that God did in the past and how God worked in Redemptive history. Barbara, I don't know if you've ever been to one of these places where you go and it's a historical Park. [00:30:56]
I think ideally okay ideally denominations would not be doing this, they would not be selling out to the world in this way. But if they do then ideally after that the second idea would be individual congregations would withdraw from that denomination. [00:41:36]
The principles of Isaiah chapter 43 apply to the believer under the New Covenant. If those promises applied to the believer under the old Covenant which obviously they do, I mean Isaiah chapter 43 is speaking to Israel to the people of God, genetic Israel the Covenant descendants of Abraham Isaac and Jacob. [00:43:06]
