Our Nation as God's Vine: Speak, Stand, Confess

The psalmist sets Psalm 80 before the people as a word about Israel, God’s own vine brought out of Egypt and planted in the land. Yet that prosperity is not safe if the nation forgets the God who gave it.

The warning turns serious because independence as a nation depends upon dependence upon God. The greatest danger is not finally from outside enemies who want to blow things up, but from inside forces that want to tear down the hedge. Atheism, humanism, revisionism, socialism, communism, false morality, and the tearing down of the old protections are named as threats that would pluck the fruit and devour the root.

The answer is not merely an election. God’s people must speak up for the Lord Jesus Christ, stand up for the truth no matter the cost, and confess up that only God can save. Psalm 80 repeats the prayer, “Turn us again... cause thy face to shine, and we shall be saved,” and that prayer becomes the cry for a nation and for every soul that needs salvation in Jesus Christ.
