Sermon Summary

The narrow way is not restriction. The narrow way is relationship with Jesus, the way, the truth, and the life. Christ came so that people could have life, and have it more abundantly, not so that they could live under a bunch of boxes checked off on a list.

Now faith is what keeps a believer living in the now instead of trying to live off yesterday’s faith. Childlike faith runs to the Father with a tender heart, not because it has figured everything out, but because it knows where love is. Abiding in Christ means giving Him all of life, not just one room of the house. Christ does not want to be visited in the living room while everything else stays shut off. He abides in the whole abode: marriage, family, work, finances, decisions, recreation, and every part of the story.

Righteousness comes as a gift through Jesus Christ, and repentance keeps a believer on that path of righteousness for His name’s sake. Repentance is not being sorry for getting caught. Repentance turns from the old way, turns from what is bad, and returns to the One who leads beside still waters. The Lord is the Shepherd, and His goodness and mercy follow those who stay close to Him.

Obedience then becomes the next step on the narrow way. Obedience is better than sacrifice because God has always wanted the heart, not merely an outward thing that looks clean. Sacrifice without the heart can become a transaction, like buying an animal at the temple courts with no real cost, no relationship, and no surrender. Obedience says yes from the inside, not like little Johnny sitting down on the outside while standing up on the inside.

Mary’s words at Cana give the whole direction: “Whatever He says, do it.” Jesus said fill it, and the servants filled it to the brim. Jesus said draw it, and they drew it.
