Choose the Narrow Path That Leads to Life

Jesus comes to the end of the Sermon on the Mount with a command, not a suggestion: “Enter by the narrow gate.” The choice stands before believers and nonbelievers every day, just as Joshua declared, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” The wide gate looks easy, popular, and open-minded, but its path leads to destruction. Adam and Eve stepped onto that path when they listened to Satan instead of obeying God.

The narrow gate is Jesus Christ alone. Christ says that He is the way, the truth, and the life, and no one comes to the Father except through Him. The narrow way leads to life, but it is difficult because discipleship costs everything after salvation. Salvation does not cost the sinner anything because Christ paid the price with His precious blood, but following Christ means leaving behind old sins, old habits, and sometimes old influences.

The Holy Spirit gives evidence of real salvation by making a person a new creation. The old does not disappear all at once, because growth is a process, but the Spirit convicts God’s children and works on the things that are not pleasing to God. A profession without any change needs an honest heart check. Christ does not call people to stay comfortable in sin while claiming His name.

Jesus also warns about false prophets who come in sheep’s clothing but are ravenous wolves. False teaching often leaves out the hard parts of God’s Word, including repentance, correction, chastisement, and obedience. False teachers can also add to the gospel through legalism, multiplying requirements that Christ never gave. God’s Word must remain the standard, and Christians need to bring their Bibles, test doctrine, and see whether a teacher’s fruit matches the gospel of grace alone through faith alone.

Jesus finally gives a terrifying warning that not everyone who says, “Lord, Lord,” will enter the kingdom of heaven. Confession matters, but true confession comes through the Holy Spirit and bears the fruit of obedience. Obedience does not save, because salvation is not by works, yet repentance and a changed life show that Christ is truly known. The Spirit keeps working, molding, shaping, convicting, and drawing God’s people toward peace through confession. Christ calls the lost to make today the day of salvation and calls His people to repent, obey, and pray for those God lays on their hearts.
