Jude calls God’s people to contend for the faith once and for all entrusted to the saints. Jude warns that certain individuals slip in quietly, use Christian language, pervert grace into a license for immorality, and deny Jesus Christ as the only sovereign Lord. Paul gives the same warning to Timothy: people with itching ears gather teachers who tell them what they want to hear, then turn away from truth and turn aside to myths.
Progressive Christianity, in this argument, is what happens when culture rewrites Christianity. Progressive Christianity retains some Christian vocabulary, speaks of love, compassion, care for the poor, opposition to racism, and concern for the marginalized, yet places modern progressive values over the clear authority of Scripture. Scripture does not stand beneath human feelings, personal experience, or cultural ethics. Scripture stands over believers, corrects believers, and calls believers to rise to God’s standard.
The Bible remains inspired by God, true, eternal, and firmly established. The Bible does not expire when culture changes. The contrast is plain: progressive Christianity changes Scripture to fit culture, while biblical Christianity allows Scripture to change hearts, thoughts, behavior, and desires to fit God’s will.
Progressive Christianity also redefines sin by shifting responsibility away from personal rebellion and repentance. Sin gets relabeled as identity, righteousness gets called harmful, and evil gets called good. Grace then gets twisted into a permission slip for continued sin. Grace does not affirm people in rebellion. Grace forgives sinners, transforms sinners, teaches sinners to say no to ungodliness, and leads sinners out of sin.
Jesus Christ cannot be reduced to a good moral teacher, radical activist, or one path among many. Jesus declares that He is the way, the truth, and the life, and no one comes to the Father except through Him. Jesus comes as Savior, King, and Lord. Discipleship therefore requires denying self, taking up the cross daily, crucifying sinful desires, and following Christ even when obedience is uncomfortable.
False teachers often come with warm smiles, selective Bible verses, familiar Christian words, and appeals to love and justice. False teaching gradually shifts foundations until holiness, repentance, biblical authority, and the lordship of Jesus have been hollowed out. The call remains to preach the Word in season and out of season, correct error with patience, rebuke dangerous lies, encourage faithfully, and refuse to rewrite the gospel for cultural approval. The faith was delivered once for all, not so each generation could reinvent it, but so every generation might be saved by it and contend for it.
Key Takeaways
- 1. The faith was delivered once for all. Jude presents the gospel as a received faith, not raw material for every generation to reshape. Biblical Christianity does not evolve according to whatever the culture currently celebrates. The church is called to guard what God has entrusted, even when that faith becomes unpopular. [05:41]
- 2. Scripture stands over every believer. The Bible is not a book that believers correct when its commands feel difficult. Scripture corrects thoughts, behavior, desires, and cultural assumptions because it is God’s authoritative Word. Submission begins where personal disagreement stops being the final authority. [16:08]
- 3. Grace leads sinners out of sin. Grace is never God’s permission for a person to stay comfortable in rebellion. Grace forgives real sin, breaks sin’s power, and trains believers to say no to ungodliness. A grace that only affirms but never transforms is not the grace described in Scripture. [21:37]
- 4. Jesus is the only way. Jesus does not present Himself as one helpful option among many spiritual paths. Jesus comes as the crucified and risen Savior, the King, and the Lord who calls for faith and repentance. His exclusive claim is not arrogance but God’s merciful provision for sinners. [23:16]
- 5. Cultural approval cannot replace faithfulness. The desire to make Christianity acceptable to the world can slowly empty Christianity of its substance. The gospel reaches people with love, but it never hides the call to deny self and turn from sin. Truth spoken with patience remains more loving than affirmation that leaves people captive. [40:56]
