Mud Changed My Story

Jesus meets the man born blind just after escaping the temple, when stones had been lifted against Him. Jesus does not rush past suffering, even when danger is close. Christ stops, bends down to the man’s level of need, and shows that no trouble is too small for His compassionate heart.

The disciples bring the wrong question: “Who sinned?” Their theology had taught them to connect suffering quickly with personal guilt. Jesus refuses that judgment. John 9 does not present God as making a man blind just so He can later heal him. The man’s suffering becomes the place where the works of God are revealed, and God receives glory when Jesus brings transformation.

Jesus makes clay with saliva, anoints the blind man’s eyes, and sends him to the Pool of Siloam. The mud itself does not heal. Jesus, the Creator, is at work. The man’s obedience becomes an expression of faith, and he comes back seeing. Mud that had changed many stories for the worse now becomes part of a story changed for the better.

The neighbors notice the change first. The man had been known as a blind beggar, but Jesus gives him a new identity. Christ changes more than outward circumstances. Christ changes the name, the direction, and the story of a person who comes to Him. Those closest to a transformed life will eventually ask how that change happened.

The healed man gives a simple testimony: “A man called Jesus made clay.” His witness does not glorify fasting, effort, discipline, or religious performance. His witness glorifies Jesus. “One thing I know, that though I was blind, now I see” becomes the language of every life that Christ has touched.

The testimony produces two responses. Some people ask, “Where is He?” because they want to know the Jesus who brings peace, hope, forgiveness, and courage. The Pharisees reject the man because wrong theology can produce hard judgment and blind hearts. Jesus seeks the man after he is cast out, reveals Himself more fully, and receives his worship.

The pizza and plate picture brings the call home. The testimony is like good pizza, but the life carrying it is the plate. A rude, harsh, complaining life can make even a true testimony unattractive. Christ calls His witnesses to let their words and their lives agree, so that people may come and see that the Lord is good.
