Moved With Compassion: Becoming Christ’s Hands and Feet

Fresh expressions of church begin where people already are, not only where established church expects them to come. The week in Ocala showed recovery Bible study, Bibles and Burritos, dinner church, tattoo parlor church, food pantry, and recovery housing all making room for people who may never first walk through church doors on Sunday morning. Community becomes more than getting people into one hour of worship. Community becomes a place where somebody finds family, learns to be loved, and then learns how to love a child, a neighbor, or even themselves.

The higher power hour holds together body, mind, and soul. Recovery cannot just deal with behavior while leaving the soul forgotten. Testimony gives people a way to say that God stepped in, sometimes through a grandson who felt led to stop by, knew CPR, and found someone in time. God walks with families in the middle of the hard, slow healing, even when nobody would have chosen the journey.

The Good Samaritan shows what happens when compassion moves in the gut. The priest and Levite keep going, but the Samaritan stops, cares, carries, pays, and makes room. That gut-level empathy can become the beginning of ministry. Compassion Church and Open Arms Village show that compassion is not only a feeling. Compassion finds beds, jobs, food, recovery programs, program fees, friendship, and a next step for people trying to build a new life.

The tattoo parlor question asks whether God is a cover-up artist. God has names written on God’s hands, and Christ comes as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. A regretted tattoo can be covered, just as a former “thug life” can become a life marked by Christ. The blood of Jesus covers sin before people even know how much they need that grace, but grace also calls for a response, acceptance, and a changed direction.

Elijah’s exhaustion reminds tired people that God sometimes gives a snack and a nap. Rest is not failure. God gives differently to different people and calls differently from different people, so comparison has no place. The call is to let God move the gut with empathy and plant a seed for whatever ministry, partnership, or fresh expression might make room for another person.
